Financial Reports
Financial Report - October 05, 2017

Noisebridge has $83,299.38 in the bank.

_Breakdown:_
$45,058.43 in the general fund, which is about 7-1/2 months of critical expenses.
$26,822.04 for Noisetor
$5,830.12 in the equipment fund
$3,037.48 in the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Foundation
$1,412.96 in the broadcast fund
$763.35 in the laser maintenance fund
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits
$XXX in the Roguelike Celebration fund (placeholder—all roguelike moneys treated as general fund until we reconcile numbers)

Notes:

“Critical expenses” include rent, utilities, Internet, trash collection, insurance, accounting fees, legal fees, bank fees, and state business registration fees, but does not include drink purchases, t-shirt or sticker printing, or payments for repairs and consumables. Critical expenses add up to around $6,000 per month.

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since October 2 and their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship, as well as their most recent payment for hosting.

$439.53 in book royalties were added to the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Foundation.

Some equipment fund money got spent on guitars, audio mixing rack infrastructure, and PS4 controller.

Eventbrite is starting to send us money for the next Roguelike Celebration, which we’re fiscally sponsoring again this year. They’ll be making a 5% donation of their revenue to Noisebridge’s general fund, which they estimate will be around $500, but that may be higher or lower. If they have a surplus when it’s all said and done, we’ll keep it in the bank as the “Roguelike Celebration fund,” for use at the next event. All of the expenses and revenue will be forwarded to treasurer@noisebridge.net for me to crunch the numbers. Until I actually crunch those numbers, though, I’m going to just treat all suspected Roguelike revenue (like mysterious Eventbrite deposits) as “general fund” for the purposes of these financial reports.

Financial Report - October 02, 2017

Noisebridge has $83,145.56 in the bank.

_Breakdown:_
$43,725.28 in the general fund, which is about nearly 9 months of regular expenses.
$28,348.54 for Noisetor
$5,922.48 in the equipment fund
$2,597.95 in the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Foundation
$1,412.96 in the broadcast fund
$763.35 in the laser maintenance fund
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits

Notes:

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since September 19th and their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship. $288 was added to the laser maintenance fund from the laser maintenance cash donation box.

By my accounting, we have 37 dues-paying members and philanthropists kicking in $2,331.80 each month. It’s possible more people are paying dues in cash, which is harder to trace. I’m following up individually with some people. We have only 14 members who I know to be current on their dues, 2 members on hiatus, and 13 members who may or may not be paying dues or on hiatus but aren’t paying dues with the email address I have on file. We have 23 philanthropists I know to be currently paying dues.

Financial Report - September 28, 2017

Noisebridge has $81,642.30 in the bank.

_Breakdown:_
$42,552 in the general fund, which is about 8-1/2 months of regular expenses.
$28,305.79 for Noisetor
$5,922.48 in the equipment fund
$2,597.95 in the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Foundation
$1,412.96 in the broadcast fund
$475.35 in the laser maintenance fund
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits

Notes:

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since September 19th and their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship.

We recently spent $379.74 from the equipment fund and $379.73 from the project-specific donations to the general fund to purchase a MakerBot Ultimate 3D Printer. There is currently a fundraiser for a Prusa I3.

We just paid our rent for October, so our new post-rent baseline is $42,552. Our previous baseline (September 1st) was $40,054.28, which means that the general fund grew by nearly $2,000 this month.

That gain is even more impressive considering we took a dip of $2,500 to buy all of that Club Mate near the beginning of the month and still have about 2/5 of it left.

The expected return on the remaining Club Mate is about $1,200-$1,300.

So if we count our chickens before they hatch, our general fund grew by $3,200 - $3,300 this month.

Financial Report - September 19, 2017

Noisebridge has $84,761.46 in the bank.

_Breakdown:_
$45,343.19 in the general fund, which is just over nine months of regular expenses.
$28,220.29 for Noisetor
$6,336.72 in the equipment fund
$2,597.95 in the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Foundation
$1,412.96 in the broadcast fund
$475.35 in the laser maintenance fund
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits

Notes:

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since September 16th and their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship.

Financial Report - September 16, 2017 - Including Breakdown of #NB10!

Noisebridge has $84,486.38 in the bank.

_Breakdown:_
$45,115.61 in the general fund, which is just over nine months of regular expenses.
$28,172.79 for Noisetor
$6,336.72 in the equipment fund
$2,597.95 in the Thomas J. Shutt Memorial Fund
$1,412.96 in the broadcast fund
$475.35 in the laser maintenance fund
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits

Notes:

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since September 12th and their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship. It also takes into account new royalty payments to Thomas’ foundation.

We got another big deposit ($1,037.53) into our checking account from Eventbrite. We don’t know why they keep giving us money, but it’s great!

We spent $587.04 from the broadcast fund for A/V, staging, and lighting equipment for the Noisebridge 10th Anniversary Exhibition & Ball (#NB10). Each of the five performers for #NB10 were paid $200 from door and drinks donations, for a total of $1,000. We made several reimbursements from the equipment fund as well related to #NB10. Drinks and other remaining expenses were paid for out of the general fund. The event was extremely net revenue positive for the space.

Miscellaneous #NB10 expenses are described here: https://noisebridge.net/wiki/NB10-Misc-Expenses-Tally

Reimbursed drink expenses were $929.96, mostly reflected in totals from previous financial reports. Total expenses from the event add up to $3,639.24, not counting Club Mate consumed. The bartenders estimated 5 boxes, or 100 bottles, of Club Mate were consumed, previously purchased with general fund money at an estimated total cost of $315. $587.04 of that came from the broadcast fund. $638.01 of that came from the equipment fund. $2,729.19 came from the general fund, inclusive of the estimated cost of Club Mate consumed.

Our total revenue over the long weekend was $4,988.60. Subtracting expenses that were reimbursed from the general fund, the general fund increased by $2,259.41 over the weekend. Subtracting all expenses, our overall total accounts increased by $1,034.36. But spending money from the equipment fund and broadcast fund is a good thing! That money is meant to be spent.

(Note: Because this takes into account the estimated cost of Club Mate consumed, technically our cash accounts increased by $1,359.36, and the cash in our general fund increased by $2,574.41. But I think the cost of Club Mate should be included in the accounting for the event, the same way we deducted the cost of purchasing alcohol. The fact that Club Mate was pre-purchased in bulk is immaterial for our purposes of analyzing the event.)
Notes:

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since September 6th, their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship, their subscription payment for their second hosting set-up, and a bunch of little one-off purchases and fees.

Financial Report - September 6, 2017

Noisebridge has $79,618.40 in the bank.

_Breakdown:_
$38,601.54 in the general fund, which is under 8 months of regular expenses.
$28,668.83 for Noisetor
$375 from Friends of the Public Library to reimburse Circuit Hacking Mondays for kits

Notes:

The general fund is below its typical level because of thousands of dollars of reimbursements for Club Mate, alcohol, and t-shirts for the Noisebridge 10th Anniversary Exhibition & Ball. Expect that to flood back in over the weekend.

This running total takes into account Noisetor’s donations since September 1st, their 5% contribution to the general fund for fiscal sponsorship, and their recent $841.20 purchase of a server. It also includes several reimbursements for items available for donation during NB10:

$404.16 to Ruth for the purchase of Bulleit and beer
$460.80 to Jarrod for the purchase of custom t-shirts

This total does not separate out project-specific donations for the new 3D printer, but those donations are being recorded appropriately by donate.noisebridge.net. When the project hits the magic number, we will direct money from the general fund and a matching grant from the equipment fund to purchase the new 3D printer.
The expected delta between donation revenue and cost of purchase is around $700 for the pallet. We also reimbursed Lady Red $53 from the equipment fund for the purchase of a dress form for the sewing area.

We recently got a $1,956.49 deposit in our checking account from Eventbrite, and your treasurer does not know why. If anyone knows why, let him know for the record.
There are many colors of filament spools to use for printing projects. Take note of which plastic type your filament is and choose settings appropriately. The wrong plastic can damage the printer and make your prints look look like drek.

* Note: Replicator defaults are feedrate 40 and 220 degrees C. Setting them to feedrate 80 brings up an accelerated settings warning. The printer is ready to handle 80.

The Flashforge Creator doesn't seem to work as well on a cold day.

Quick start: Printing a .stl or .gcode file on the Flashforge Creator using Threed
If you've just sat down in front of Threed and the Flashforge Creator, you'll probably see a dark cold printer, and a blank or locked screen. Turn the printer on using the switch on the rear left (next to the power cable) and make sure the USB cable is plugged in to both Threed and the printer.

Drag the lock screen up to get to the desktop, move the mouse to the top left hand corner of the desktop to open the menu, and click 'Show Applications' (3x3 grid at the bottom of the menu), then open Terminal. Type the following:

cd replicatorg-0040
sudo ./replicatorg

Now prepare the build platform (see below) and try out one of the example prints. Select File | Examples | 20mm_Calibration_Box.stl from the top menu, then click Generate GCode. Select the left extruder, no raft, no support material, default gcode, use print-o-matic, 10 infill, 0.27 layer height, 3 shells, 80 feedrate, 100 travel feedrate, 190 print temperature (220 if the air temperature is below about 60F). Click 'Generate GCode'.

Once the GCode generation process is finished, click the 'gcode' tab (above the 3d / gcode display part of the window) and look for this line:

M109 S110 T1 (set HBP temperature)

Change it to:

M109 S90 T1 (set HBP temperature)

(This sets the temperature of the heated build platform to 90C, which is correct for PLA. 110C is good if you're printing with ABS plastic.)

Now click the icon at the top left of the window that looks like an arrow pointing at a bean. The printer should home its platform, then spend some time warming up, and finally do your print!

-- User:Myelin, 30 November 2015

Preparing the build platform
If you're printing in PLA, you want the part of the build platform that'll hold your part to be nicely covered in blue painter's tape. It should be sitting flat on the platform, not all bubbled up (which happens when someone sets the platform temperature too high for the tape). If it looks messy, rip it off and replace it.

Also put a little square of blue tape on the front left of the platform. After warming itself up, the extruder will dump out a bit of plastic in that corner before heading to the center of the platform, and if there's nothing in that corner, it'll end up carrying a messy blob of plastic along with it, and screw up your print.

-- User:Myelin, 30 November 2015

Printing with ABS
I haven't had as much luck with ABS as PLA; it's a more difficult material to use, and you need to tweak the temperatures to get it to work properly. The instructions on top of the Flashforge Creator say to extrude at 230C, and use 80 for both feedrate and travel feedrate. Make sure you select the right hand extruder when generating GCode. I believe 110C is correct for the platform temperature, so you shouldn't need to edit the generated GCode like when printing with PLA.

You should also use kapton tape (translucent orangey stuff) on the build platform as opposed to the usual blue painter's tape.

Notes

Upcoming Events
* This friday at 7pm: Tahoe-LAFS Cryptoparty at Noisebridge
Announcements
* Torrie: Lots of books in boxes, not on shelves. Naomi is organizing to build an archimedies spiral bookshelf. Talk to her to help.
* Friday 9am: EFF is fighting surveillance in a federal court here in SF. Wear a suit if you go.
Membership
Torrie explains: membership not required to participate. Only gives power to block. To apply, get two sponsors, fill out the form, your name is read at each meeting for four weeks... no rush, hang out for a long time before applying so everyone knows you.
Membership applications
* Signal / Andrew McMurray (sp?) - sponsored by Naomi, Torrie, and Jarrod. Second week.
* Sam Tupper - sponsored by Kevin and Monad. Week four. Not present.

No new members tonight.

Monad: we should have more members taking care of the space

Mitch: agreed

Torrie: Also we need cash.

Financial report
* We're broke.
* No we're not!
* We have three months in the bank. $27,868, roughly $10k of which is NoiseTor.
* Would be nice to have more.

Patrick is working on splitting NoiseTor money from Noisebridge. Also working on figuring out who is and isn't a member. He'll be at 31C3 so don't expect updates in the immediate future. We'd also like to have a fundraiser at congress. Lots of BACH people will be at congress.

Some questions about what 31C3 is. Mitch and Torrie explain.

Lots spent on electrical work for the reboot, getting ready for inspection. Money was well-spent.

Someone asks if indiegogo funds paid for projectors; no, that was Rubin. Thanks Rubin!

A visitor suggests charging for classes. Discussion of how Noisebridge has avoided that ensues.

Consensus items
Kevin relays rayc's proposal that consensus be required to close the space. It is noted that Rayc was recently banned. Kevin doesn't want to sponsor it as a consensus item but would like to discuss it later.

Kevin describes Noisebridge's consensus process. Proposals, discussions, takes two meetings minimum. Requires that no members are in strong opposition.

Torrie: another term for a block is a principled objection. WHen you feel so strongly you'd walk away if proposal went through. Also distinguishes capital c Consensus (the formal process) from lower-case c consensus (ad-hoc general feeling).

Mitch: people should work toward compromise when raising objections. Weak objections should also be addressed.

There are no items up for consensus tonight.

Discussion items
* Mitch: Passed electrical inspection, still need building inspection. Comments?
* Mitch: Rayc is someone almost everyone in the community likes but he is now no longer welcome at Noisebridge. We should talk about that. (will return to this)
* Kevin: Noisebridge being open for the holidays.
**Dan: Should be OAP: as Open as Possible.
* Raven: Funding the serger repairs and related improvements to the sewing infrastructure.
** Mitch: explains Noisebridge's instant crowdfunding practice. Put up a wiki page and ask for donations.
** Raven: in this case, machine already exists, Raven has already paid $80 for improvements out of pocket. Rayc suggested reimbursment might be possible.
** $180 spent; one serger is now in good working order, other machines not. Got a quote for ~$160 for fixing other industrial machine, other industrial serger.
** A hat is passed around the meeting for donations to reimburse Raven.
** Raven's phone number is on the machine. Call her if you need help using the serger without damaging it. It's a really good machine, please don't damage it.
*** The Sewing mailing list is mentioned.
*** Will Raven teach a class? It sounds likely.
** Mitch recently spent a few hundred $ on LED panels in Singapore, and would also accept donations.
* Someone asks if 5moF still happens. What's that? Mitch explains: 5 minute lightning talks on the 3rd thursday of the month. Historically a very popular event. Started by aestetix long ago, several curators have run it, most recently John Shutt. Currently on hiatus. Someone should pick it up again.
* Naomi coordinating with Neil about preparing for building inspection. Not too much needs to be done. $7k extra being charged by electricians by surprise; Naomi is trying to figure out what happened with that. Total was supposed to be under $20k, is now significantly over.
* About Rayc
** What happened?
** Mitch:
*** this tears me apart :(
*** He has become very hurtful recently. He was screaming and yelling violently at people.
*** Rayc has been doing excellent things for Noisberidge in the last few months.
*** Noisebridge has been through his cycle several times
*** First time Mitch has been on his shit-list.
*** Was caught sleeping on top of the elevator. Never did take responsibility. Was temporarily banned by consensus. Didn't stay away for the whole 6 months; people let him come back early.
*** Recently after a long positive part of his cycle, he hit a negative part of his cycle, and yelling at people. It became apparent that he was living here again recently. Was again asked to take a break a few days ago, but didn't, more screaming and yelling violently.
*** People need to help him find help outside of NB.
** Kevin:
*** Last week, late at night, there was an agreement from Rayc with Kevin and Torrie that he would take a break. He went to sudo room for a day, and then returned.
*** Can this be another temporary break instead of permanent?
** Mitch: needs to be years
** Torrie: everything is temporary.
** Bill: i find it hard to believe he does things out of no reason. ok, he was living here again, sounds like he's homeless. So, if he isn't here, he has nowhere to be? How to help him?
** Pod: commenting as an outsider, only known him 2 months. Haven't seen his dark side, always super positive, very sad to hear he won't be around here to work with. Did see some progression of him getting a little nutty with devotion to the electrical project, seen this before where people put a lot into a community and then expect some support in return. Can't this community support him now?
** Mitch: not in the space anymore.
** Torrie: He needs love and support. We've given what we can.
** Fiona: maybe people who've worked with him can do some sort of intervention to get him to seek professional help. wide range of services available in SF, but only he can do it. also make it clear it isn't a permanent ban.
** Mitch: he has gotten a lot of support from people in the community; seems impossible to get past a wall once he decides something is a certain way. Anyone else would've been kicked out long ago; people like him.
** Mohammed: what problems do people have with him?
** Torrie: will go into details after the meeting
* Mitch: about keys: rayc and pirate matt both had keys to the door. Pirate matt was asked to take a break for a month; he came back last night (after more than a month). Working on self-improvement, returned his upstairs key. But others had keys, so upstairs lock was changed. Downstairs key remains same as ever.
**There are currently 7 people with keys to the new upstairs lock: Mitch, Torrie, Naomi, Jarrod, Patrick, John Shutt, Rubin. Kevin should also have one but doesn't yet.
** Torrie: Elevator lock has 2 keys: torrie and casey
** Leif: how does that work? these 7 people coordinate to open NB every day?
*** Mitch: this is very new. right now NB is sometimes closed when it shouldn't be. Soon there will be an RFID system for the upstairs lock.
** Some discussion of historical events, good and bad.
* Dan: on a pragmatic note, while Mohammed is here, I'm a 10 minute walk from the space, have spent many days and nights here. Offer myself as someone who is going to be here at least until Jan 5. Would like to be here a lot, would like a key. Mohammed has been responsible here at night and helped get people out of here. Lets keep it open over the holidays.
** Mitch: would like to see it open during the holidays. NB should not be all about the 7 keyholders. OTOH don't want to see NB abused, keeping people who belong here away. Have been rebuilding our immune system post-reboot.
** Steve: which of the 7 people are gone for the holidays? At least John and Jarrod will be here.
** Steve: proposes that Mohammed, John, Jarrod, and Dan all plan to open the space at 10am and close it by 10pm over the holidays whenever they are available. Give upstairs keys to Dan and Mohammed.
** Torrie: needs to go home, no objection to this proposal.
** Kevin: lets leave the time up to the people here
** Mitch: not comfortable leaving the space open at night when so few people are here.
** Mohammed: we should have a schedule so people can check online to see when the space will be open during the holidays.
** Leif: big C consensus on this proposal is impractical since the next meeting will be sparsely attended. New key thing seems by doocracy so far, so I hope new key holders will give Dan and Mohammed and Kevin keys.
** Duncan: you're falling into a keyholder clique, this is a really bad pattern. DANGER! I've seen this tear multiple communities apart.
** Steve: we're aware of these problems and will address it soon with RFID.
** Kevin: conversation has been inverted. instead of consensus to close noisebridge, now we're talking about consensus to give keys to new people.
** Dan: have a good feeling about the tone of this meeting, good to talk about these things, we'll get it right.
** Mitch: will you keep rayc out of the space?
*** Dan: yes.
** Bill: could there be a number for people to call to get the space opened?
** Mohammed: yes, we can do that.
** General agreement that the people with keys and who will be around during the holiday time will keep Noisebridge open as much as possible -- for the holidays, and moving forward. In general, the hours everyone will strive to keep Noisebridge open are 10am to 10pm. The people who either have or will have keys during the holiday time are: Dan, Mohammed, Jarrod, John, Henner, Monad, and David.
* Some talk about RFIDs, logs (do not want), threshold encryption.
