Time proposal: Thursday evenings

[[User:mollybee|mollybee]] Thursday nights conflicts with my ASL class which starts after 6:30. So I can show up for half an hour, but then need to take off on a grunting public demon. I can come to Noisebridge earlier though.

[[User:rachel|rachel]] is fine with this but will probably miss occasional weeks.

[[User:elgreengeeto|Skory]]'s preference is Thursday since I like to have weekends more open for unforeseen adventures.

Milk and Cookies

David Molnar would like to host a "Milk and Cookies" event in the space. The idea is pretty simple: everyone brings something to read out loud for 5 to 7 minutes. Bring whatever you want - an essay, a short story, a novel excerpt, a technical paper, the bash.org quotes book, a circuit schematic, a beautiful theorem and its proof, just bring something that speaks to you. Then tell it to us.

We drink milk, eat cookies, and learn a bit more about each other by listening to our reading choices. I've been part of a group in the past that does this, it is a lot of fun. Maybe we could add beer, too.

Refreshments - at least two ideas here:
# Everyone chips in $5 or so for buying the refreshments. Organizer buys ahead of time.
# We do a potluck, no money changes hands.

Looks like the thought is towards potluck (see Discussion tab).

Introduction to the AVR Microcontroller

An introduction to the Atmel AVR family of microcontrollers by [[User:Mightyohm|Jeff]] and [[User:Maltman23|Mitch]].

The curriculum has not been determined, yet, but will include:
* basic electronics
* intro to microcontrollers
* build your own AVR programmer
* how to set up your computer to develop your microcontroller projects
* build a bunch of simple, fun projects, each of which will teach a fundamental microcontroller concept

Microcontrollers are very cheap (as little as $0.50 for the simplest ones), and very powerful! With them you can do an amazingly diverse range of projects, anywhere from turning TVs off in public places, to playing computer games, to making robots move or see, to creating beautiful (or obnoxious) music, to anything your imagination can come up with! And anyone can learn to make their own projects with them, given a little background.

The Atmel AVR family microcontrollers are very easy-to-use, and easy-to-learn. There are lots of free, open-source tools available for it, and lots of open-source projects that have all documentation free for the download online. There is also a user forum called AVRfreaks.org, full of geeks all over the world, 24/7, just waiting to answer your questions about your AVR microcontroller project. For these reasons, and more, it is a very popular family of microcontrollers for the DIY (Do It Yourself) crowd, which is why we've chosen to use it for this set of classes.

==Suggested Purpose==

To set a time each week to meet at Noisebridge and practice speaking Mandarin and to draw ideograms. (And of course to further prepare ourselves for the inevitable Chinese ascendancy.) Please list your name and what times would be good or bad for you if you're interested. Also note if you would like to involve the eating of Chinese food, possibly even cooking it ourselves.

[[User:elgreengeeto|Skory]] - Most any evening other than Monday and of course Tuesday. Food is good, and I'm into cooking if enough people are interested in getting together the necessary equipment and helping.

:(Re:Above) If enough Mandarin beginners are interested I'd be happy to teach some basics of character writing and grammar. But please do not try to learn pronunciation from me! -skory

[[User:mollybee|Molly]] - I speak survival Mandarin and just got back from a year living/working in China. My pronunciation is fairly natural, though my vocabulary limited. I read and write around 500 characters, but want to collect the whole set! Win big prizes! Happy Everyday!
