Event Calendar
Not all events make it onto this calendar. Many events only make it to the Discussion or Announcements mailing lists, IRC or in person at . Best of all, Noisebridge is about people getting together at the space in San Francisco to do stuff... like in person. Some events just happen. Pay attention!

If you'd like to host an event yourself, we have advice on hosting an event at Noisebridge.

Event posters are encouraged to crosspost to the Google Calendar. View the Google Calendar, view the Google Calendar in XML, or the Google Calendar in ical format.

To post Google Calendar entries for your event, contact a Noisebridge member for access.

(Wouldn't it be great if there were a gCal mediawiki plugin so crossposting wasn't needed? Do you know of a good one? Help us!) <- working on this, need to upgrade Mediawiki in order to use some plugins.

Intro to Microcontrollers
First workshop
topics
1-electronics
2-arduino
3-programming
----
1.
open circuit vs closed circuit vs short circuit. short circuits are easy to do and not notice, it just breaks your components.

electricity - mechanical controls of electricity

electronics - electrical control of electricity

transistor - an electronic switch

Electric current is the flow of electrical charge through a conductor

voltage - analogous to water pressure
current - analogous to water flow rate (e.g. gallons per minute)
resistance - somewhat analogous to a blockage in a water pipe, reducing the rate of flow

---

2.
digital pins 0-13: each can be either output OR input. When output, each pin corresponds to an individual transistor which is under your control (via your program)

DIP-name of type of chip, with 2 parallel rows of legs (DIP = Dual Inline Package)

----

3.
software environment - file-examples-

/*multiline comments*/

//short comments at end of line

2 things minimum to make a program

void setup () {entire function}

void loop () {entire function}

(don't worry about the "void" for now)

installing drivers: comes with the software kit

once installed tools/serial port menu gets clickable, choose your port. then make sure you chose the right chip!!

Thursday, August 19 2010

Advanced topic: Counters and timers

First workshop

topics
1-electronics
2-arduino
3-programming
----
1.
open circuit vs closed circuit vs short circuit. short circuits are easy to do and not notice, it just breaks your components.

electricity - mechanical controls of electricity

electronics - electrical control of electricity

transistor - an electronic switch

Electric current is the flow of electrical charge through a conductor

voltage - analogous to water pressure
current - analogous to water flow rate (e.g. gallons per minute)
resistance - somewhat analogous to a blockage in a water pipe, reducing the rate of flow

---

2.
digital pins 0-13: each can be either output OR input. When output, each pin corresponds to an individual transistor which is under your control (via your program)

DIP-name of type of chip, with 2 parallel rows of legs (DIP = Dual Inline Package)

----

3.
software environment - file-examples-

/*multiline comments*/

//short comments at end of line

2 things minimum to make a program

void setup () {entire function}

void loop () {entire function}

(don't worry about the "void" for now)

installing drivers: comes with the software kit

once installed tools/serial port menu gets clickable, choose your port. then make sure you chose the right chip!!

General:
First hour, aimed at beginners, is a crash course in basic electronics,
basic programming, and basic install of Arduino IDE on your laptop.

Second hour presumes everyone knows the basics, and explores a more
advanced topic, such as I2C communication between two Arduinos,
interfacing to Processing and/or The Internet, or multitasking. Thus,
people who already know the basics can simply show up for the second hour.

What should you bring?

To get the most out of the workshop, you want to participate in the activity. This requires a laptop and an Arduino. You might use one of the public computers at Noisebridge.

Arduino: Either bring your own or I'll have the standard Duemilanove for sale at $30 each.

Any sensors or actuators that you wish to experiment with. I'll have some loaners for anyone who has none yet.

Want to save time?

Download, and, if you can, try to install the Arduino IDE from http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software
