These are the notes from the The 504th Meeting of Noisebridge. Note-taker: Patrick, Louis; Moderators: Kevin.

Introductions
Noisebridge is a hackerspace founded in 2008, moved here in 2009. We have some members and lots of non-members that use the space. We're a 501c3 and we have only one rule which is be excellent to each other (Naomi).

We're a non-profit. Everything you hear is free and you can always donate. Lots of workshops and classes, lots to learn (Mitch).

* Kevin - Moderator here tonight. Kinda tired and loopy, but entering a second wind state. Coming here 2 years and likes to hack brainwaves
* J - Been here for ~10 months. I do sysadmin things by day and tinker at night with software and hardware.
* Jade - I like psych, neoroscience and programming. I'm with the Neurohacking group here on Wednesdays
* Daniela - I have a startup that makes poly keyboards. Launched my app 2 days ago in Noisebridge. Given French classes here before, been coming a while.
* Louis - SW engineer in the bay area, coming to NB for ~2 years. Working on the Lifex bulbs.
* Olivier - Data Analist working w/ python.
* Dan - Programmer also involved w/ the neurohacking cabal on wednesdays. That's all
* Scotty - Coming here for ~4 years. SW engineer turned entrepreneur, full time nomad. Spent the week sailing land yachts in the desert
Announcements
* Daniella: launched the polyglot keyboard last weekend at Noisebridge 9th April, launch party at 547 Howard street, the venue is called "Ecosystm";
* Daniella: conference at the Moscone center at the end of may: "apps world congress";
* Mitch: June 26th all day event here from the library association, will be teaching librarians how to use Arduinos, afternoon will be a panel with the librarians, please contact me with any cool project to demo to those librarians.

Membership binder
* Daniella, wk4: I have been coming at Noisbridge for several years and it has been part of my life since I have been working on my Polyglot keyboard project!
* Louis, wk3: not writing for myself.
Daniella:
* Mitch: I invite you to post-pone your application;
* Kevin: Why do you want to become a member? I've been coming here very often, it's been a great resource to build my company and meet people. I used to teach French here which has been a great-time. Since I speak many languages and I feel like a bridge here. I'm also from the neighborhood which allowed me to keep the space safe at several occasions;
* Hanner: How would you improve the diversity in the space? Well as I woman, being here is already a good thing. Be myself, stick it out and make it easier for the next generation;
* Dan: How you've seen conflicts get resolved? Have you seen things working in the long run? Be natural, be yourself. I have been avoiding slack, and discuss because of the drama and I prefer coming here and face people, talk to them directly get away from drama;
* When was the first time I came here?: before occupy in 2012, I was sharing vegan meals. And by meeting the people running those occupy, meal-sharing, squat operations I learned that NB was one of the two hundreds collectives here in the city.

Consensus says: Daniella hasn't been accepted as a member tonight.

Financial report
* Checking+Savings: 22k, some of that being Noisetor which has been hovering around 9k;
* 13k after rent and everything this month (3 months of runway).

Consensus and discussion
No current consensus item.

Discussion
* Angie (achau@castilleja.org): schools are getting mackerspaces but people don't know how to run them, can we host an event the 16th in the evening? We have been doing at the exploratorium so far about 30/40 people. -> We are all good with that, please make it happen, there is some instructions in the wiki.
* Kevin: board of directors election: Jonathan More has been added to the list after the deadline, does anyone knows how to contact him? There is a debate about how he ended up in the list.
* Kevin: board of directors election: Does anyone know Fishman?
* Mitch: board of directors election: If we can't get a hold on them, let's just move to the next person in the list.
* Dude, probably Harry: Dave from optimizely wants to host a circuit building hacking thing as a team building event for his job. -> This is cool, new people are always cool, as long as it respects Noisebridge: the event should stay open for anyone. Harry will follow-up with him.
* Mitch: I'll be gone from April 1st to June 1st, so I will not be leading circuit hacking on Monday at 7:30PM. If other people wanna do that, it would be very excellent. You don't need specific engineering skills since it comes as kits, just basic soldering skills. Torrie will help with that, please join him in this!
* Harry: when does our lease expires? Mitch: August 31st, this place isn't rent controlled, Andy has been good to negotiate the lease last time, we should discuss with him. Should we try to sell Noisebridge as a marketing tool for the building?

* Sam: this application has been stale for 12 weeks and is being discarded, please apply again;
* Hanner:
** First time here in 2009, I was a hacker so I came here, but not very often, I got to know more people at camp 2 years ago;
** Got more involved during reboot and Noisebridge is now a nice place again;
** Jay: what's your vision of the space in like 5 years? -> I wanna keep this space, even though it's getting harder, I wish we had a good, solid, more mature community so we can have a more accessible space, more interesting and bigger projects, we don't have that yet;
** Jen: what are the responsibilities of members? -> first and foremost, provide an environment where people are excellent to each other, making sure that the community feels welcome, help people to be excellent to each other and the space;
** Kevin: What is your approach to consensus? Most of this things that happens and are discussed in the space are usually good so consensus mostly is about not saying no. Get everyone on the same page, it has been abused before and I don't want this to happen again;
** Bill: How do you deal with abuse of consensus: abuse happened with proposals that refused to be discussed and that were getting blocked, it can happen, but it can't be systematic. Consensus is a very strong tool because you can veto things so it has to be used sparingly;
** Daniella: What you think we can to improve the diversity of the space and bring-in more women? Women are discouraged to do anything technical in our society, how can we improve that? One is spread the word about the space, encourage everyone creative to come. Since the community is male dominated, sexism is latent, this is something that need to change, watch for and regulate;
** Jen: why do you wanna become a member? -> Because I like this space, it's kinda like getting married, you can live together without being married but it marks a commitment. I want to see the space thrive, I subscribe to what Noisebridge stands for, it's very important for the new generation to learn and ask silly question, learn they would have never seen otherwise and this important to me.
* Jay: participated in the reboot, love the people here and the vibe:
** Mitch: what is consensus? -> When the space is healthy, all these ideas are being discussed. When consensus is working, you know the space is healthy. Consensus being blocked is a sign that the space is not healthy;
** Kevin: why do you wanna become member? Membership seems to be the right way to do it, you show up for you a while, you work on projects, being a member feels like an acknowledgement from the community to be here; A member should be somebody that protects the vision of what the space wants to be.
** Kevin: what is your vision for the space? -> I fixed my console when I was 13 and I would have loved to have space like Noisebridge to do it, I want to make this space good and safe enough so that women and kids can come. The dreams I had when I was a kid, I want to make Noisebridge where those kind of dreams can happen;
** Efny: How do you think you could bring more people of color and/or from different kind of incomes? Show people around, show what the possibilities are and point them in the right direction, explain to people that the space can be used for meetings and so-on;
** Jen: what are the responsibilities of a member? Pay dues, you have a financial responsibility towards the space, the other one is about consensus. Protect the space, its vision and future.
* Daniella wk3: got along with people, Noisebridge has been part of my life since the inception of my keyboard project;
* Louis wk2: I have been writing meeting notes.

New members:

* Hanner!!
* Jay!!

Consensus and Discussion
No consensus proposal.

Daniella: I wanna paint the tables in Church in black.
People: Just do it™.

Efny (sorry this is probably not your name): I wanna take pictures of the space (while asking anyone that would be in the space);
People: Just do it™.

Discussion Items
If any important discussion happens, it should be happening after forward progress is made during consensus.

Financial Report
Noisebridge just paid rent.

* Funds in bank: 19k checking, 3k in savings;
* Noisetor (See the bulletpoints at the bottom of http://noisetor.net/finances/#summary): 9k from the 21k above;
* Matching donation fundraiser still going-on, please talk to Patrick about it, we wanna have it public in the next two weeks.

Keep in mind we are a 501c3 so you can deduct donations from your taxes.

If you also wanna use money for the space, please, contact Patrick, patrickod on IRC and Slack.
** Kevin: what is your vision for the space? -> I fixed my console when I was 13 and I would have loved to have space like Noisebridge to do it, I want to make this space good and safe enough so that women and kids can come. The dreams I had when I was a kid, I want to make Noisebridge where those kind of dreams can happen;
** Efny: How do you think you could bring more people of color and/or from different kind of incomes? Show people around, show what the possibilities are and point them in the right direction, explain to people that the space can be used for meetings and so-on;
** Jen: what are the responsibilities of a member? Pay dues, you have a financial responsibility towards the space, the other one is about consensus. Protect the space, its vision and future.
* Daniella wk3: got along with people, Noisebridge has been part of my life since the inception of my keyboard project;
* Louis wk2: I have been writing meeting notes.

New members:
Daniella: I wanna paint the tables in Church in black.
People: Just do it™.
Efny (sorry this is probably not your name): I wanna take pictures of the space (while asking anyone that would be in the space);
As a member of Noisebridge, you don't just come here to hack and learn, you actively work to improve what you see around you, help to deal with problems, and make this community and space better than it is today.

* Matching donation fundraiser: 10/11k right now, Rubin and Patrick have a list of people to reach out to get more donators to commit to donate and will work on it soonish.

Consensus: we need moar money, keep in mind that we are only running on donations.

You don't have to be a member to donate.

Concerns about higher rent: to make things clear, there is no plan to move in another place. The lease is ending this year in the summer or fall and yes we need to start thinking about how we are going to negotiate the new lease given the state of this building and the market state.

* Kevin: It felt uncomfortable, I don't wanna do it again. The people who where here felt more trustable than me (the only member in this space) at this particular moment;
* Steve & Louis: we think that the access control we have in place is one of the success of this reboot;
* Dan: I sympathize with Kevin's feelings, but giving the space hours helps bringing-in balance to it;
* Mohammed: tell the people that get kicked out in the evening or who are stuck in the mornings to come at the meeting. Scheduling members who open and close the space is interesting because it makes you identify regulars;
* Louis: I really like the concept of balance, I think closing and opening hours bring balance to the space; I also really like Mohammed idea of a schedule of people to open or close the space.

Being a member of Noisebridge is not like being a member of a gym or your local chess club. Anyone can come to Noisebridge to hack and learn: you don't need to be a member for that. At Noisebridge, membership is something different: it means taking responsibility and committing to help to maintain, improve, and govern Noisebridge. As a member of Noisebridge, you don't just come here to hack and learn, you actively work to improve what you see around you, help to deal with problems, and make this community and space better than it is today.

* Read off any names from the binder for the past month. Mark down a check or other indicator on every open application to keep track of how many weeks they've been read out.
* Anyone eligible to join this week should
** introduce themselves,
** answer any questions members may have for them, then
** leave the area in search of gifts (traditionally beer and a lime, or cookies) for the rest of the group.
* The rest of the meeting should reach consensus on whether they may join.
* Remember to applaud new members when they return.

Financial Report
* Funds in bank:
* Noisetor (See the bulletpoints at the bottom of http://noisetor.net/finances/#summary):
* Any other details by those participating in handling our financials

Consensus and Discussion
* invite a knowledgeable volunteer to give a brief primer on consensus process
* It is important that everyone in attendance understands at least:
** Blocking with verbalized principled objections.
** Why we use consensus over other approaches to decision making.
** How consensus isn't a legislative process
** Why consensus isn't applicable to some things like conflict resolution, resolution of time sinks, and the like.

Discussion Items
If any important discussion happens, it should be happening after forward progress is made during consensus.

End of Meeting
* Reprise of the Hackernationale. [This is anarchy - we do what the wiki says!]
* PGP Key Signing could happen now (if it doesn't happen before any given Meeting). Ask others around the space or check the list to see who wants in on the action.
* Return the membership binder to its rightful location.
* Clean and tidy the meeting notes including removing all these really verbose instructions, then save them to the wiki.
* Send a summary of the meeting notes to the discussion list.
* Enjoy the company of your fellow hacker, robot, or robothacker.
* Discuss any items for which there was not time during the meeting.
Not really, it leaves a 10-20mm stripe of light and black vertically pretty much at the middle of the scan area. Sometimes it hangs too, causing some scanning software to crash. The USB cable that came with it was kinda broken but changing it didn't fix anything.

Alex
Alex is taking care of the dog of Veronica. The dog has been barking and pooping in some part of the shop. The discussion is about Alex and the dog belonging to the space or not.

* Johny: has seen the dog barking, snapping at people. Alex has been very defensive against myself and Leif about taking the dog out;
* Monad agrees with Johny;
* Alex: I'm not familiar with the dog snapping at anybody, the dog didn't bite anybody. I always stay close to the dog, and in the worst case I tie the dog up;
* Kevin: this discussion should not be happening, there is a policy that says if somebody feels threatened by the dog, then the dog shouldn't be here;
* Ryan: If the behavior of the dog is taken care of, then I think a ban is not the appropriate reaction.
* Jake: Non-service dogs don't bring anything to Noisebridge.

Kitchen
James Sundquist: We moved 1.5ton of stuff out of the kitchen, money used to dump things out and buy new stuff needs to be expensed.

This will be discussed at the next meeting.

Fundraiser
* Saturday 10th August, all welcome to celebrate Noisebridge. All ages, all welcome events. You're welcome to bring food.
* Publicity is key right now.
* Church is gonna be experimental music, whereas Hackitorium is gonna be more conventional music.
* Have a look at https://noisebridge.net/wiki/Party for how to help and what to expect.
Alex is taking care of the dog of Veronica. The dog has been barking and pooping in some part of the shop. The discussion is about Alex and the dog belonging to the space or not.

* Johnny: has seen the dog barking, snapping at people. Alex has been very defensive against myself and Leif about taking the dog out;
* Monad agrees with Johnny;
* Alex: I'm not familiar with the dog snapping at anybody, the dog didn't bite anybody. I always stay close to the dog, and in the worst case I tie the dog up;
* Kevin: this discussion should not be happening, there is a policy that says if somebody feels threatened by the dog, then the dog shouldn't be here;
* Ryan: If the behavior of the dog is taken care of, then I think a ban is not the appropriate reaction.
* Jake: Non-service dogs don't bring anything to Noisebridge.

Kitchen
James Sunquist: We moved 1.5ton of stuff out of the kitchen, money used to dump things out and buy new stuff needs to be expensed.
