I'm pleased to announce a really spectacular talk about OpenBTS that
will happen next Thursday (the 12th of March, 2009) around 20:00 (8 pm).
The talk will be given by David Burgess, a totally awesome hacker who's
part of the OpenBTS project. He sent along this blurb:

"OpenBTS is an open-source system that allows ordinary GSM handsets to
be used as SIP or IAX clients. The project's goal is to enable a new
type of hybrid cellular telephony for greenfield deployments in the
developing world, using the GSM air interface as the "last mile" in
rural VoIP networks. We will describe some of the ideas that came
together to inspire this project and will outline the project's approach
to mapping GSM services to IP-based protocols using applications like
Asterisk, MySQL and Kannel."

You may have heard about the cell phone network that popped up at
Burning Man 2008? He's of the guys who brought that to life:
* Reproducible, documented, build processes.
* Make it easy to use your own IMAP, XMPP, calendar, and other servers, using encrypted network protocols whenever possible, as first-class citizens in the Android environment.
* [http://www.torproject.org Tor] mode for anonymized networking.
* Easy tethering over USB, Bluetooth, and wifi.

==Overview==

What if someone wanted to set up a cell network with a Siemens BS-11 base station transceiver and a gnuradio USRP card using open source software? You'd have two lab basestations to play with and to learn cell telephony with. Some have expressed interest in data applications, and the possibilities seem pretty endless, barring regulatory problems. Someone raised the possibility (sorry I forgot your name) of using RF blocking fabric to create a Faraday cage so you could test the base station without causing disruption.

==Build process==
OpenBTS software requirements:
* apt-get install -y libboost-dev python python2.5-dev libfftw3-dev swig sdcc-nf libusb-dev guile-1.8-dev libcppunit-dev libosip2-dev libortp7-dev asterisk
* gnuradio: http://gnuradio.org/trac/wiki/Download
** wget ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gnuradio/gnuradio-3.1.3.tar.gz
** tar -xvzf gnuradio-3.1.3.tar.gz
** ./configure --enable-usrp
** make -j3
** sudo make install
* OpenBTS:
** ./configure
** make -j3
** sudo make install

If you hit an "abort is not defined within this scope" or similar error, add a stdlib.h include to the offending source (such as RegExp.h):
#include <iostream>
+#include <stdlib.h>

Given FCC permission, we could operate the transceiver. For outgoing calls we can use the same VOIP account being used for the pay phone.

From what I understand, infrastructure-wise do that you'd need:

* A first linux box running the openBCS software
-- this box needs an E1 card and a free PCI slot for it (money has been collected from generous volunteers for the E1 card)

* A second linux box running openBTS/asterisk
-- this box needs one or two RFX900 (900mhz) tranceiver daughterboards for the USRP card

On the other hand, it may be possible to consolidate the OpenBTS and OpenBSC software on one box... maybe more will be revealed at the OpenBTS/GSM talk on Thursday. I just realized USRP is either USB or ethernet based (Depending on version) so we only need one PCI slot.

Since we need outgoing voip for a variety of apps I wonder if we can isolate the asterisk service once things are stable so it can be shared by the pay phone, etc. But, that is speculation at this point.

There are three barebones computers laying around the kitchen area.
* The black case has an ASUS kv8-max3 motherboard and an AMD-64 cpu, a PSU and cdrom, network, no ram (supports up to 400mhz ddr), no HD
* the beige case has an old-ass motherboard that looks damaged, a 2gig HD, and aside from having a cool slidey MB tray mechanism appears useless
* the smaller media case has a newer micro-itx motherbard with a cpu, ram, integrated VGA and ethernet, and some kind of funky power supply (maybe a picoPSU) and looks like the best candidate to be up and running quickly
* there is a small black 3.5" bay PSU that might be usable in the media PC case mentioned above

There is an ubuntu 8.10 i386 install disk in the library area in a pile of CDs. As for displays, the apple display has ADC, so a converter will be needed. The projectors probably have VGA, but we may be out of luck on DVI unless someone has an adapter, or wants to try to bring up a serial console of of a linux install disc.

An introduction to the Atmel AVR family of microcontrollers by [[User:Mightyohm|Jeff]] and [[User:Maltman23|Mitch]].

The curriculum has not been determined, yet, but will include:
* basic electronics
* intro to microcontrollers
* build your own AVR programmer
* how to set up your computer to develop your microcontroller projects
* build a bunch of simple, fun projects, each of which will teach a fundamental microcontroller concept

Microcontrollers are very cheap (as little as $0.50 for the simplest ones), and very powerful! With them you can do an amazingly diverse range of projects, anywhere from turning TVs off in public places, to playing computer games, to making robots move or see, to creating beautiful (or obnoxious) music, to anything your imagination can come up with! And anyone can learn to make their own projects with them, given a little background.

The Atmel AVR family microcontrollers are very easy-to-use, and easy-to-learn. There are lots of free, open-source tools available for it, and lots of open-source projects that have all documentation free for the download online. There is also a user forum called AVRfreaks.org, full of geeks all over the world, 24/7, just waiting to answer your questions about your AVR microcontroller project. For these reasons, and more, it is a very popular family of microcontrollers for the DIY (Do It Yourself) crowd, which is why we've chosen to use it for this set of classes.
