He watched people hand-solder 0.5mm and smaller pitch devices with that scope. IIRC it had a ring light and a 2x objective lens taking it to 20x-80x rather than 10x-40x, but the extreme end of magnification was unusable. The ring light is way better than a bulb light, but workbench light is good enough for a start.
Looks like less awesome stereo scopes are available as cheap as $150 used on EBay.

The goal is to use blocks of foam as a structure for the payload. We'll carve out relatively closely fitted voids to hold the various components.

Shape considerations:
* balloon sheds turbulence during ascent; torpedo shape might be best for that
* APRS antenna with a 19" radius ground plane parallel to the ground would reduce signal energy sent upwards

Michael's original email:

Notes on foam:

*) Probably want XPS (eXtruded PolyStyrene). This is a water proof, dimensionally stable, grain free foam. It tolerates very low temperatures well, and doesn't burn easily.
It cuts easily and cleanly with a sharp knife. It doesn't crumble or shed.

Brand names are 'Dow Hi-Load 60' or 'Corning Foamular 600'. Foamular 250 should work just fine (the difference in the number is the compression strength).

It appears that places like Lowes carry it, and it costs ~ $15 for a 2 foot by 8 foot by 2 inch block.
(which is probably enough for about 70 million flights).
Best of all, Noisebridge is about people getting together at the space in San Francisco to do stuff... like in person. Some events just happen. Pay attention!

Event posters are encouraged to crosspost to the Google Calendar. View the Google Calendar, view the Google Calendar in XML, or the Google Calendar in ical format.

To post Google Calendar entries for your event, contact a Noisebridge member for access.

(Wouldn't it be great if there were a gCal mediawiki plugin so crossposting wasn't needed? Do you know of a good one? Help us!) <- working on this, need to upgrade Mediawiki in order to use some plugins.

Electrostim

More electrostim excitement ensued. Once again, driving signal generator output backwards through a transformer extracted from a wall-wart into 3M red dots on our valiant experimenters.

Skin resistance. We tested this after the other tests, and found that the resistance started low and climbed. These numbers are about when we got sick of waiting for it to stabilize. Mikolaj: 55 kOhms, Orion: 50 kOhms, Mike: 116 kOhms, Rachel: 300 kOhms

Results were recorded chronologically. MikeW and Mikolaj observed notable sweating on hands, Orion and Rachel not at all. Also belatedly noticed that symmetry was way skewed to one side until MikeW's second test of second round.

General conclusions: 1mA seems to be a sensible upper bound for current. Next step is to build an inductor-based current source based on standard dc-dc boost topology.

"If you can't beat the robot armies, join them."

We are concerned with human-machine interfaces.

Motivations
We want to "make the invisible visible", to bridge our senses. Many group members were inspired years ago by this awesome Wired article, which describes obtaining an <i>unerring sense of direction</i> via a compass belt. Is the brain really plastic enough to adapt to entirely new senses? How natural would it feel after you've fully adapted? Then what happens when you take the device off?

What new sense do you want? What existing sense might it map onto?

Terminology
To avoid confusion (where possible) we'll try to use these terms.

"Sensor" is the device that detects external stuff that the body (probably) can't detect. Sensors can be divided into those that sense the world, and those that digitize a user's actions. The latter are more commonly called "human input devices", (HID's).

"Display" is the way the device shows data to the body (not necessarily visually). This gets around the device-centric / body-centric problem that shows up when using the terms input & output.

"Armature" is the physical component of the device: the belt, hat, armband, etc; distinct from the electronics.

Mailing List
We have created a cyborg mailing list on the Noisebridge server. Please join us!

Component Sourcing
Here are pages for discussing:

sensors
detect a property of the world

displays
communicate it to the body/mind
armatures
hold the above together and in the proper place on the body

They also include a list of all known/speculated types of each.

Sensor and Display API
*What might that mean?
**A standard protocol that can:
**#encompass most sensory data of the sort we are interested in researching
**#allow for presentation of any those data through any of a wide variety of modalities

*Why?
**Plug-and-play(ish) interoperability of sensors and displays. Build three sensors and three displays, and we have 9 possible combinations, und so weiter.
**Simplify development by separating sensing and presentation design/tasks.

*How?
**On the data sensing end:
**#Identify a primary set of interesting stimuli, consider various encodings thereof.
**#Abstract away from the physical phenomena the stimuli represent and look instead at common patterns in the data streams.
**#???
**On the data display end:
**#Identify and prototype a number of display methods.
**#For each method think of:
**#*What modulations of the signal are possible; intensity, spacing, direction, timing...? Based on that, what is the theoretical bandwidth of that method?
**#*How sensitive is the average person there? How much of the signal can the brain interpret meaningfully (too much noise vs. too weak of a signal)? Based on that, what is the <em>practical</em> bandwidth that we might expect?

General conclusions: 1mA seems to be a sensible upper bound for current. Next step is to build an inductor-based current source based on standard dc-dc boost topology.

Sensebridge: The Noisebridge Cyborg Group

There is some interest in a field trip to a shooting range to shoot guns in a Safe and Orderly manner. If you're interested, list your name below, along with any time restrictions and whether you are able to drive a carpool. The nearest range to 83C is, to the best of my knowledge, Jackson Arms in SSF.

No previous knowledge or experience is required. If you always wanted to try shooting a gun, this is a good opportunity for that.

Bay Area Ranges
Jackson Arms is an indoor 25 yard range, about a 15 minute drive from 83c. They require that an experienced shooter be at each lane, but an experienced shooter can share their lane with two or three beginners, provided that the experienced shooter passes a safe handling test and signs a form taking responsibility for the actions of the beginners they're supervising. I've gone there with large groups before and they've been accommodating and friendly. They have fun stuff to rent, and I think it's a great place to learn.

My favorite range in the bay area is the Chabot Gun Club range in Chabot national rec area in the east bay. It's a gorgeous outdoor range in parkland, but a bit of a drive, and only open when weather permits. They don't have rentals, so we'd need to bring our own supplies. The longer ranges make rifle shooting a lot more interesting than it is at Jackson. The longer drive, occasional fogged-out days, and lack of rentals makes Jackson the easier option however.

There are a few other ranges in the Bay Area as well, but I think these two are the ones worth considering.
* Rachael - tired of introducing herself, not at best on sunday mornings
* Lamont - electrical engineer
* Mikolaj - easily excited by these things
* Todd - grad school for neuroscience
* Eric - applied mathematics, sensors,
* Christoph - mad scientist, flux gate magnetic sensor on CMOS, treating epilipsy
* Praveen - does software stuff, machine learning background, computational biology

Show & Tell
* Rachel - lilypad, small vibrating motors, purring cat pillow using capactive sensor (also made tribble)
* Todd - magnetic vibrating hat, has experienced very little local distortion - e.g. you need to be within a foot of fridge to get bad readings. Uses JameCo magnetic sensor.
* Skory - modulate a single vibrator to indicate moving in the direction of north, but his vibrator motor hasn't arrived yet, and code isn't quite done
* Eric - ring mouse again, battery from bluetooth headset, must bring in Forever Flashlight
* Mikolaj - magetic sensors, accelerometers are both ~$30 each
* Skory - parallax provides board for above, with chip, also $30
* Todd - has hacked WiiMotes, they are cheap
* Skory - speech visualization, spectrograph, formants, sibilants. Visually, tongue display - using 3D model of mouth based ono formants, sibilants from analysis. Stimulate the tongue in the same way that happens when the speech is produced (front, back, high, low). Check animation prior art?

API discussion
* 3 parts: sensor, physical form factor, outputs (from device to body)
* agreement on termonology: device centered or human centered
* "display" as the outputs (inputs to humans), "sensor" as the device
* "armature" as physical form factor - arrangement of sensors and displays, also where the device interacts with body
* transmit data as "display" - n x m array with x height in each cell
e.g. 1 x 8 array for 8 motor hat, with amplitude in each cell
* Mikolaj - I2C - 2 wire bit banging protocol
* Christoph - recommends CAN to avoid wiring issues
* Eric - SPI.
* ZigBee?
* microprocessor on each end (sensor, display). Makes prototpying / swapping display/sensors across projects easier
* we're not ready to discuss API yet - we need to build some stuff to learn first. Make Instructables!
