Some members of Noisebridge (Jacob and David) are interested in acquiring at least one OpenPGP smart card each. Add yourself to the list at the bottom of the page.

The prices are reasonable once we get them in quantity (prices here):

1 Stk. 16,40 EUR/p.p.
2 Stk. 15,40 EUR/p.p.
5 Stk. 14,40 EUR/p.p.
10- Stk. 13,90 EUR/p.p
It seems likely that the right card reader is USB:

Mitch wants to teach a soldering workshop, and Mikael wants to carve pumpkins.

Time and Place
Saturday, 25 October, 3:00pm<br>
at Noisebridge, 83C Wiese (near 16th St. & Mission)

Overview
You can learn to solder! Anyone can. Soldering is a basic skill for just about all electronics projects. If you've never soldered before, this workshop will give you the confidence to solder in less than two hours. If you want to learn how to solder better, this workshop will show you how. If you have soldered before, this workshop will teach you to solder surface mount parts with confidence.

Learn by doing!
I will have fun kits to learn with. For total newbies (and those interested), I will have kits for
Trippy RGB Waves project, a trippy, fun mood light using Red, Green, and Blue LEDs that has sensors on it to create waves of colors if you put a few of them together (scroll down from the link for more info). For more experienced people I will have a surface mount project (yet TBD -- but it will be fun!). You will be able to take your completed project home with you. If you prefer, feel free to bring your own soldering project.

Once you're done with your project, wouldn't it be awesome to fit your newly created functional LED thingie into a pumpkin? Making it reactive to ambient light? This way, you could have your own Jack-O-Lantern that only glows when glowing brings anything. So join in the pumpkin hackin' part too - with a light-sensitive LED circuit that'll take care of your pumpkin lightin' woes.

Cost
Mitch's teaching time is free of charge, but the Trippy RGB Waves kits cost $10 each (which is what they cost me), and the surface mount kits will probably cost about $20 each. Feel free to bring your own soldering project if you prefer (no charge for this).

As for the pumpkins, Mikael'll organize a pumpkin shoppin' trip on Saturday, and as long as you get requests through by then, you'll have a pumpkin. Charges for that: the price of your pumpkin, rounded up a bit to fund the cutting tools. Depending on size, anything from $2 to $15 (numbers are wild and unsubstantiated guesses).

Trippy RGB Waves lighting project
Imagine a bunch of little lights (maybe 20 or 40 of them), on a table, each about the size of a chess piece. Each is independent of the other. You arrange them around on the table any way you want. Each one continually slowly changes colors on its own. When you wave your hand over them, it creates waves of colors that follow your hand.

Here is a 30-second video of the
Trippy RGB Waves project in action.

More info on these kits is available at:
www.CornfieldElectronics.com<br>
(scroll down till you see the section for Trippy RGB Waves kit).

Light sensitive pumpkin lighters
With a pair of LEDs, a transistor and a photocell, and some wires, resistors and cabling, your pumpkin will react to ambient light and light up when the photocell detects darkness. It's a reasonably easy beginners project - with no more than 15 solder points altogether, and a total cost around $5, including a battery and a battery holder to drive the whole assembly.

Expressions of Interest
Add your name to the list here if you'd be interested in participating! Don't worry — we won't hold you to it.
Noisebridge is now located at 2169 Mission.

The original Noisebridge location was 83C Wiese St, in the Mission district of San Francisco. The space was on the ground floor of a commercial fourplex on a narrow alley just off of 16th St very near Mission St.

Contact number for the space
As of 2009-07-09, we have a Cisco IP Phone for use in the space. It allows outgoing calls. For details, see the Telephony page.

Shelf organization
There are 3 categories of shelving:

* SHARED - put tools & useful things here that anyone can use
* HACK - put donated items that can be taken apart or used up here
* (NAMED) - put your name on a shelf and keep your projects there. Labels are on top of the microwave.

(Anyone got a better idea on how to arrange this?)

Layout
* Downstairs main room - 30'x20' (plus bathroom and kitchen). Tiled throughout.
* Downstairs "fishbowl" room - 10'x12' approx + closet
* Upstairs loft - 30'x15', shoji sliding screens + closets. Carpeted.

Electric Upgrade
We're upgrading electricity Electricity Upgrade

Electrical for the workshop courtesy is done.

Expected next electrical job is to bring power to the loft for the computers.

Nicknames for the space
The street name ( Wiese ) is appropriately a German word for a meadow, pastures or green fields. I (ioerror) propose and will call the space "Noisebridge Meadows" in honor of not wanting to butcher the pronunciation of the word.

I'm calling it "83c". - adi

Well, I'm calling it "83c3", in reference to CCC e.g. 25c3 this december, we'll be living in the future! - grey (A very forward thinking name ioerror 02:33, 2 October 2008 (PDT))

Couple of people recently calling it: (hands claw-shape towards ears, flick palms open five-shape twice) (hands clasped in arc with fingers laced together).

Alternative nicknames will come in good time.

Donations
Have something you want to donate to the space? List it on the ThingsWeHaveToGiveAway page.

Needs
Looking for an opportunity to contribute? Look at ThingsWeWant for a list of things the space needs.
Suggestions
While the color and concept is nice, the circuit is kind of ungrammatical. The little bumps on the top and bottom are used to emphasize that two wires are crossing over one another and not connecting --- but there's no other wire there for them to pass over.

A simple way to fix this would be to add a vertical line through the middle of the logo all the way to the edge of the circle; that would render the circuit grammatically correct, although it still wouldn't be a circuit that did anything useful, except perhaps convert a little sound into heat.

A perhaps cleverer idea would be to incorporate a "bridge" circuit into the logo. A bridge is a square with a diagonal, with things connected to the corners of the square not on the diagonal, and it's the simplest circuit that can't be decomposed into series and parallel subcomponents. A bridge rectifier with a speaker on the diagonal would be both a nice illustration of the name, and also might have interesting nonlinear audio effects (as an output stage, not as a noise generator itself) if you actually built it.
After some IRC discussion, I'm uploading a photo of a pencil sketch of a Wheatstone bridge with an AC power source and a speaker in place of the galvanometer.

A Few Ideas
Got to playing with InkScape a bit today, and made a few noisebridge-themed things to consider.

The circuit in the first is an audio signal going through a bridge rectifier to a speaker, which I haven't built (yet), but which would have the effect of kicking the fundamental frequency up an octave and distorting everything. The wheatstone circuit above would fit this layout too. This one had the interesting unintended side effect of being shaped like a cartoon rocket. The other two are just pseudo-oscilloscope buttons showing noise, keeping to the shape and color scheme of the current logo with a simpler theme. I uploaded these as pngs for easy web viewing, but if anyone wants the svgs to play around with let me know.
<h2>Lecture</h2>
Weekly classroom-style presentation on HTML/CSS/JS. The lecture starts every Monday at 8pm. We also have a recap starting at 7:30pm, where we'll cover the (very) basics, such as explaining what "front-end" means, discussing tools of the trade, and understanding basic HTML and CSS.

<div class="classes__current">
Class for 2014-11-03: Preprocessors
Front-end code can often get very repetitive and hard to maintain. We'll expand upon last week's talk about backend code generation by introducing preprocessors - languages which compile into HTML, CSS, or JS. We've taken a look at PHP and ERB, but we'll also walk through languages that look nothing like HTML (HAML), and languages that compile into CSS (Less, Sass + Compass) and JS (CoffeeScript). These languages can make your life much easier as they help keep you from repeating yourself (DRY!). We'll also introduce Middleman, one of many workflow systems that makes using these languages easy.

To prepare for this class, consider installing RVM with the --ruby=2.1 flag if you're using OS X or Linux, or Ruby via RubyInstaller for Windows. You can then install Middleman.

We'll be working on the NoiseCo site.

<h2>Lab</h2>
We also meet for a weekly lab/workshop where we work on an assignment that covers the material learned in the lecture earlier in the week. Those working on their own personal projects are also more than welcome to come and solicit help. Every Thursday at 8pm in the Turing classroom.
Noisebridge is also a great place to hang out and work on projects. However, if you spend a lot of time at Noisebridge and you're not paying for membership, you'll be expected to contribute in some other material way to the space and the geek culture surrounding it. <br />
Learn HTML, CSS and JavaScript - and put them to good use! This class, taught by Jeffrey Carl Faden, is aimed at beginners who are interested in web development, as well as seasoned professionals looking to brush up on the latest and greatest.

Front-end web development is all about making code that runs in the browser (versus code that runs on the server). There isn't a big focus on web design (creating wireframes and mockups), but we do cover best practices for turning these designs into beautiful code.
