Alchemy
Alchemy is an old art and science, practiced as a hobby, profession, life work, or magic by folks for thousands of years probably. Alchemy is based on the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water. There may be a Fifth Element, Energy (or Love, if you happen to be Milla Jovovich). Among the processes practiced by an alchemist are mastery of the elements, balancing of the four (five) elements, distilling, levity and gravity experiments, and each may have a Master Work, which he or she is continually working on.

Hack Alchemy
Alchemists live fully the reality they are experimenting with. This means not exactly literal fire, or water, but an affinity for the elements. By experimenting with the vocabulary as well as the nature of the elements, alchemists whole-heartedly and whole-mindedly can modify and alter the world around them. For alchemists, getting the desired outcome is a matter of manifestation, or the processes by which that can occur.

An alchemical transformation is to change one idea which is negative into another which fits the model. For example, decolonize or hack the idea of trash into materials. Trash manifests these materials freely, with actually a negative value for the source person or firm generally. This includes wood, metal, paper, plastic tarps and stuff e-waste such as speakers. Any construction site has these materials regularly, people who are still consumers make them, firms, and households, and dumps. In order to be sustainable, we will have to reduce the trash that Earth produces to near zero. This means that these designs (and, this process), which function well for their purpose (eg to fit our lives and solve environmental problems) will be where our Economic activity will want to be based we alternative paradigm people. Everything is free alchemy: These inventions not only allow someone to live no house, no money, but also reduce waste and can be replicated without buying them.

Alchemy and Design
These four (five!) elemental inventions allow a person to live completely free - no home, no money, anywhere where there's not a fear of retaliation by the cops. It describes an alternative paradigm, and the hack-building of these items an alternative to the system.

Try it out– if you can find and design from the Noisebridge wiki, great. If you can find whatever limiting materials you need from a dumpster, and complete the rest from your workshop, that’s ideal.

External Reference
On Becoming an Alchemist: This book is fantastic. Teaches the magical concepts of alchemy in real life. http://books.google.com/books/about/On_Becoming_an_Alchemist.html?id=f6-5GJJRYT8C

The Alchemist: A most popular reference to Alchemy is the book by Paulo Coelho. With wonderful flow and a fantastic story, the story gives good fictional examples of the processes of learning alchemy as well as magically fits in your life <3 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Alchemist_%28novel%29

Bringing the Noisebridge community together to create a better space for all.

The goal of the Community Working Group is to solve problems as a group that we have historically failed to solve as individuals.

For example:

* keeping the space clean and physically safe (see also House_Keeping)
* resolving interpersonal conflicts before they become "drama".
* maintaining commonly used facilities by delegating responsiblity (and making sure to recognize accomplishment!)
* hosting social events that encourage greater connectedness, without putting extra pressure on the space.

Working Group Members
User:Daravinne

User:Nthmost
User:AdrianChadd

.....need moar members

Philosophy of Operation
We're going to try the FractalWorkingGroup strategy. This group has Noisebridge as its "parent".

The types of things we should seek to convey to Noisebridge as a whole:

* how we brought together X and Y groups, despite $PROBLEMS
* recommendations for action (e.g. "what to do about the kitchen") based on community input.
* how we identified $HARASSMENT despite cover-ups, misdirection, etc.
* new connections made between Noisebridge and the outside world (e.g. shelters and food co-ops).
* reports on how well the physical space supports (or doesn't support) the community vis-a-vis the Noisebridge Mission Statement.

Philosophy of Conflict Resolution
We'd like to see people as individuals worthy of continued participation in Noisebridge, even when they make mistakes. We believe that misunderstandings happen, and that no one is perfect. We believe that the vast majority of people have good intentions and really just want to hack!

We also believe that harassment is a serious problem and not to be taken lightly. So while some disagreements may be treated as minor interpersonal misunderstandings, some should be referred out to another group specifically set up to handle harassment. (User:flamsmark is working on this group)

Finally, we agree that certain behaviors -- particularly sleeping in the space and drug use -- can endanger our relationship with our landlord and jeopardize our lease. We hope to be able to refer individuals to local hostels, clinics, and shelters to assist them, rather than having them use Noisebridge as a halfway house or having Noisebridge throw them out.

Working Group Meetings
schedule goes here, also links to meeting notes

Possible CWG Projects
* making a New Member Packet containing info about processes, participation, etc, and probably stickers or something too
* refactoring the redshirts role and implementation
* rainbow grocery's consensus and conflict mediation workshop
* outreach/help/services for the disadvantaged/dwelling-impaired (THIS IS IMPORTANT, sure we are not a homeless shelter but our structure and openness cause us to be a vector for this demographic. i think it behooves us as an organization and as people to address this in an empathic and controlled manner.)
* ensuring clean/safe facilities (bathrooms, basically, but maybe kitchen -- depends on strength of the KitchenWorkingGroup)

Possible CWG Scenarios
* hosting a dialog between people who think the kitchen promotes the use of Noisebridge as a homeless shelter versus people who use the kitchen responsibly.
** thinking about the kitchen existing at all: if we minimize the "dishes and pots" aspect of the kitchen, and set it up to facilitate hacking type stuff like molecular gastronomy, and add a dishwasher, it could get better.

* addressing problematic behavior on the part of individuals and considering whether they should be referred to a separate mediation/harassment group.

Maybe (but maybe not):

* implementing and maintaining management software (http://spiff.readthedocs.org/en/latest/ via torrie, and https://www.loomio.org/ , and https://slack.com/ and http://www.discourse.org/

NOT in the CWG's purview
* kitchen rebuild (content/process) -- KitchenWorkingGroup should attack this one.
* refactoring consensus process and decision negotiation (consensus is not a monolithic model, and its also complex and mutable, kinda like agile/scrum methodology. participants in it should be informed and prepared.) http://web.mit.edu/publicdisputes/practice/cbh_ch1.html

These are the notes from the The XXXth Meeting of Noisebridge. Note-taker: daravinne; Moderator: john shutt.
* this meeting marks the First Noisebridge Public Meeting Drinking Game, plus people argue a lot about consensus being done away by the board, who is now taking a more active role in the political management of the space

tom is working on a thing to make gpg suck less; we wish him luck and godspeed. talk to casey or carlos.
and robin noelle has threatened legal action against noisebridge so don't talk to him (her?)

madeline: mikey seagal is hosting an event on the 12th about consciousness hacking, event info is on the list

Membership Binder
no membership activity is being conducted this week

Financial Report
we do not know how much money we have because no one can get a hold of danny. no one wants to call danny on the phone even though i am willing to hand out his phone number.

Consensus items
Consensus is no longer being done in general meetings, only in one meeting a month on the first tuesday.

Discussion Notes
who is torrenting at the space and killing bandwidth? don't do "illegal" things at the space. don't eat our bandwidth either.

madeleine says: announce email went out about consensus and board changes. madeline describes those changes. membership has become one tier (i thought it already did)

john's question: do you still have to wait a month to become a member?

tom clarifies: to become a Member, come to one monthly meeting, present yourself as clean with pants on and personal description, submit an application form; all current members will be able to see the membership applications. assuming you submitted your membership in time you are eligible to become a member if you have enough sponsoe\rs. subject to usual meeting interrogation and public display. slightly modified first month go around: wiki sponsors continue to be sponsors.

Kevin starts saying some stuff that is droney

moderating kerfuffle

thex asks about, and madeline explains some things about board process happening regarding consensus

dan asks about asking the members about discussion about the change

Kevin says more droney things

people debate about stuff!

start your own hackerspace somewhere else
dan wants to know about, and thex talks about the process to vote to remove the board

no hat banning is being talked about for some reason
hey let's debate about when someone was blocked

john gets the stack thing right! go john go

madeline explains board decision speed. made a vote that board wanted to take a more active role in noisebridge than it has been in the past. current process has proven not effective and board believes it is worth a shot to take an active role.

kevin drones

thex and al talk about process

v talks about banning josh nohat in his absence and whether it is ok

tom has a procedural comment

john wants to know if board and policy change should be separate

tom says they don't have to be since they are connected

people talking about stuff

we are clarifying what consensus is actually, as a process

dan wants to know about how many people voting for memberships per person in the case of al and tom

tom explains elections to thex, how the numbers work and the voting turnout and suchwhat

kevin oh god why

tom corrects kevin's understanding of what tom may have said

madeline clarifies something

john ellis talks

john asks if anything is governed by member consensus still or just by the board now?

madeline answers that the membership process and bannings is the same? are still up for consensus. meetings are still an arena for discussion, welcoming guests and bringing the focus back to community and projects, away from banning and policy changes and other unfun stuff

al says he is against consensus and they still voted him in

kevin talks again. oh no he wants to read notes

kevin describes something inaccurately

tom answers kevin's dumb question

........at length

about the board changing the procedure for consensus

dan yells

david is up next
david has a spiffy scarfy thing and some glasses
david urges us not to do away with consensus

ari talks about her experience of consensus in her time going to the meetings

people are just discussing consensus related nonsense
i have beer

kevin threatens to quit

uh stuff happens
drinking happens too

we consense on beer
fastest consensus ever

i make tom sad

Attendance
john
john again (ellis)
some guy who does game stuff
jade who does stuff
i might have missed someone here
david : games developer
phil: C sharp and general computing
ross software engineer apis webdev
al sweigart is why we can't have nice things
catherine is new
chris is into neurohacking and quantum teleportation

john gets the stack thing right! go john go

madeline explains board decision speed. made a vote that board wanted to take a more active role in noisebridge than it has been in the past. current process has proven not effective and board believes it is worth a shot to take an active role.

kevin drones

thex and al talk about process

v talks about banning josh nohat in his absence and whether it is ok

tom has a procedural comment

john wants to know if board and policy change should be separate

tom says they don't have to be since they are connected

people talking about stuff

we are clarifying what consensus is actually, as a process

dan wants to know about how many people voting for memberships per person in the case of al and tom

tom explains elections to thex, how the numbers work and the voting turnout and suchwhat

kevin oh god why

tom corrects kevin's understanding of what tom may have said

madeline clarifies something

john ellis talks

john asks if anything is governed by member consensus still or just by the board now?

madeline answers that the membership process and bannings is the same? are still up for consensus. meetings are still an arena for discussion, welcoming guests and bringing the focus back to community and projects, away from banning and policy changes and other unfun stuff

al says he is against consensus and they still voted him in

kevin talks again. oh no he wants to read notes

kevin describes something inaccurately

tom answers kevin's dumb question

........at length

about the board changing the procedure for consensus

dan yells

david is up next
david has a spiffy scarfy thing and some glasses
david urges us not to do away with consensus

ari talks about her experience of consensus in her time going to the meetings

people are just discussing consensus related nonsense
i have beer

kevin threatens to quit

uh stuff happens
drinking happens too

we consense on beer
fastest consensus ever

i make tom sad

Attendance
john
john again (ellis)
some guy who does game stuff
jade who does stuff
i might have missed someone here
david : games developer
phil: C sharp and general computing
ross software engineer apis webdev
al sweigart is why we can't have nice things
catherine is new
chris is into neurohacking and quantum teleportation
madeline does microcontrollers in clothing
tom is in on the jokes
monad likes spirituality
This person named Ilya was behaving irrationally, and confused his own backpack with Patricks, causing suspicion that he was intending to steal things. He also put on Patricks' clothes and said he thought people were allowed to use whatever items were in the space. He had some small, and not particularly valuable, items that he had pocketed, and had stashed random, not valuable, items in the bathroom. He was unable to explain his behavior to Dr. J and was handed over to police, who did not take him into custody, and he was told not to return to Noisebridge.
This guy went into the back classroom and took Rayc's wallet out of his backpack. Rayc saw him with the wallet in his hand and the guy tried to say it was his. He then started running towards the door and was tackled by Jake. We made him show us that nothing was in his pockets, and he kept avoiding the big pocket in the front of his jacket. This pocket turned out to have Sasha's smart phone. During the search his crack pipe fell onto the floor and broke into many pieces. We let him go and told him not to come back.
Was helping with the Noisebride ustream webcasts. He was asked not to come back due to allegations of organizing illegal activities from within Noisebridge and theft. He had a proxy return to the space a few days later on his behalf to retrieve blankets, etc. that he'd apparently stashed in the darkroom. What his proxy took was apparently not the blankets that he wanted, and he shortly thereafter came upstairs and went into the darkroom, himself leaving with a couple bedsheet-lookin' things. The fabric his associate had taken was found in a heap at the bottom of the elevator and returned to the darkroom. Several days later he returned to Noisebridge with his hand shoved in a gym bag, claiming he had as he continued pushing past people to get into the main space, screaming constantly about killing eveyone and then himself. that everyone was to leave, or he would kill them all. He also claimed that the cops were hot on his trail and would arrive at Noisebridge at any moment, and that he intended to provoke a suicide-by-cop. Not sure on whether or not he did have a gun people were not taking a chance as they filed for the exit. However, Derek, Jedi, Rayc, Ben, stayed behind, calling him on his bullshit, four people swarmed him as he made a b-line sprint for the fire escape. They wrestled him to the floor and removed his bags away from him. Jedi arm barred and escorted Jonathan down the stairs to the sidewalk where he instantly sought out the nearest quickly-amassing phalanx of squad cars. Immediate consensus was that he is not welcome in the space again.
Current Thoughts
* should we have periodic meetings like a real event? we're kind of catch-as-catch-can right now. getting everyone in one place at least once between shows would be good, and would cement a sense of responsibility in our ephemeral staff roster.
* is there a 5mof mailing list? would be nice to have one under the same setup as nb-discuss etc

Outreach and advertismentation
how we beat people over the head with our presence

* noisebridge-discuss mailing list
* noisebridge-announce mailing list
* noisebridge g+
* 5mof g+ - do we have one? also google group
* noisebridge facebook
* 5mof facebook
* 5mof twitter account
* funcheap
* squidlist
* sfstation
* sosh
* 5mof WEBSITE

Staff, goons, and minions
if you want to be staff, add your name to this list

Danny Obrien
Daravinne
Carlos
Tony Longshanks LeTigre
Current Speaker Lineup: December 2012
TBD

Audio/Video and Considerations
Patrick has been stalking and harassing female Noisebridgers. He has sent harassing emails to several individuals, and when rebuffed and asked to stop by both his targets and other people, not only refused but victim-blamed and claimed the targets of his actions had no problem with those actions (after they had explicitly stated otherwise). Evidence was collected and intense debate and discussion occurred over the course of a few days. Patrick was contacted and given the chance to correct his behavior, but he continued to maintain he did nothing wrong. As a result, several of those involved declared they did not feel safe at Noisebridge anymore in the presence of a person who exhibited tendencies to ignore consent and agency. For the safety of the many, the one was banninated.
"So, I just wanted to nip this in the bud: We are all very appreciative of advice from newcomers, but if you are watching all this Patrick Keys drama from the outside, and you think to yourself "Hey, that's some very unexcellent behavior towards Patrick!" I ask you to stop and think for a moment.

Noisebridge is a super accepting space. It was only after tremendous discussion, debate, and evidence gathering that we decided to ban him. Until the next official meeting, most of you are just going to have to trust that we have made the best decision for Noisebridge here. That is why so many names were appended to the bottom of that email. This was to say "We are signing to say this is legitimate, and that this action needs to be taken."

This was actually never about personality, or even about the mailing list. This was about Patrick making women at Noisebridge feel unsafe. This was not done based on any form of speculation or jumping to conclusions. This was done after a careful, considered process where it was decided that not banning Patrick was the same thing as banning a number of women who would no longer come to Noisebridge because of his presence and his unwanted attentions, and his stalking behavior.

Noisebridge has plenty of socially awkward geeks. We all know that if yer a chick at Noisebridge, someone might stare at your boobs. Awkward though this is, it's actually OK. Sure, it's not the most polite thing to do, but it's harmless. Women and men at Noisebridge are still perfectly free to behave like women and men. This is very far from what is taking place here. Patrick's behavior was well over the line of acceptable.

This was not a witch hunt. This is not a precedent for banning annoying or creepy people. This was about physical safety in and outside of the space for ladies with whom Patrick had crossed the line, and continued to cross the line after being told to stop.

Finally, I will say that the "intervention, mediated talking" route had already been tried with Patrick. If you are interested in reading more about Patrick's complete inability and unwillingness to listen to ANYONE about ANYTHING, there are about 4 months worth of email backlogs in our archives documenting his complete inability to listen and understand people's problems with him. It's a pattern with him.

This extended to also being unable to accept the word "no!" from women. And that makes me want to do something truly terrible to him. But instead of hurting him or assaulting him online or offline, we all decided to solve this within Noisebridge's processes. Believe me, there are others here who would have done far worse to him given the chance. The man is a menace, and does not even treat women like people. They are sexual objects to him, ones that owe him sexual attentions, in his eyes.

This is not someone we will ever be allowing back. He is pure fucking scum, and he is absolutely the antithesis of everything Noiserbridge stands for.

Let it be known: you cannot sexually harass or endanger ANYONE at Noisebridge. You will be banned if you do so and do not correct the behavior when you are told to stop. This is the precedent we're setting. And I think it is a very good one. Everyone should be safe at Noisebridge. And no one should feel unsafe outside of Noisebridge because a person associated with the space is following/harassing them.

If you are still not convinced, come to the meeting next week. I agree, this is all quite ugly, but at the end of the day, this is 100% Patrick's own fault. Noisebridge remains %99.999 inclusive. But stalkers will NEVER be welcome."
I would like to directly address Patrick now.

Patrick, can you see that it is creepy to email someone an "offer to
hook up" whose name you got off Facebook or the NB wiki? That sounds
creepy to me, not like flirting.

Then, apparently you were asked to stop contacting her, and you continued.

Then there is the denial of agency. If I said to you "I'm offended and
creeped out" and you replied "I'm certain you are neither offended nor
creeped out", then, you are not respectful of anything to do with
personal boundaries. You would be claiming to see inside my head into
what I feel in direct contradiction to what was asserted. This is a
major denial of agency attack.

Given this interaction between you and a woman you think you have
"flirted" with "jokingly", I am seriously uncomfortable with you and
when I next run into you at Noisebridge will ask you to answer for it
face to face and explain your behavior.

Also, I don't think you need to enumerate how many women you've
harassed. One is enough.

Patrick, you also wrote:

> Why does
> anybody care about mine (or anybody else's) private life? I've always
> been a good sport about personal attacks on me, but this mailing list
> has about 500 people on it. Given that everything you're discussing
> took place outside of Noisebridge, you're not giving any sort of
> consideration to this amazing non-profit that we all enjoy.

This is quite disturbing to me as well. Here, you seem to be saying
that off a public list, you can harass women who frequent Noisebridge,
with no social consequences, because any airing of the harassment in
public would hurt Noisebridge. That won't fly. I'm calling you on that
big time. No way.

Since you don't respect women telling you individually to stop harassing
them, I think we might need to organize some sort of group to come and
speak with you collectively to explain why it is unacceptable.

That might not be enough here and I'd like to know what other people
think. I feel here that Patrick has crossed a major, major line in many
ways which I listed above. I don't care if someone is kind of annoying
and a time sucker. That's inevitable. But I don't want our community to
tolerate blatant misogynist disrespect for women and blatant harassment.
Rachel's Ban-ifesto: ( https://www.noisebridge.net/pipermail/noisebridge-discuss/2011-February/021398.html )

"Patrick, the undersigned have agreed doocratically that you are no
longer welcome at Noisebridge. Do not return. If you have possessions
in the space you may contact Jason Dusek who will collect them and bring
them down to you at the sidewalk. Any of us will, if we see you in the
space, ask you to leave and escort you out.

Everyone else, we are putting up an official consensus item for banning
Patrick from the space. There is strong evidence that he has behaved in
unacceptable ways to other people associated with Noisebridge, which
makes members of our community feel unsafe.

It is a difficult balance to illustrate the problem while still
protecting the privacy of all of those involved, and the solution we
have come up with is this.

Rachel Hospodar, Al Sweigart, and Veronica Sutter are talking to those
involved to obtain the level of permission they are comfortable with.
They plan to collate two bodies of evidence, one electronic and one on
paper, documenting Patrick's behavior. Members of Noisebridge can view
this evidence by contacting them directly. The electronic version will
probably be smaller, but will be available to members on request if they
are unable to come to the space to view the paper version. The paper
version will be in the custody of Jason Dusek, who has a high level of
availability to meet members at Noisebridge and show them.

This is a serious case and we truly hope that all members are able to
take time to consider this evidence, discuss the situation with your
fellow Noisebridgers and come to a meeting next week to express your
opinion.

But stalkers will NEVER be welcome."
sexual harassment has apparently happened, it *is* a huge issue.
I didn't hear about this, and I wish I had. Could people please report
it to the list when this happens so it can be discussed and aired and
the rest of us can be aware?

This is a serious case and we truly hope that all members are able to
take time to consider this evidence, discuss the situation with your
fellow Noisebridgers and come to a meeting next week to express your
opinion.

Given that everything you're discussing
> consideration to this amazing non-profit that we all enjoy.

As a result, several of those involved declared they did not feel safe at Noisebridge anymore in the presence of a person who exhibited tendencies to ignore consent and agency. For the safety of the many, the one was banninated. ""

""This decision was not made lightly and not without in depth discussion and careful weighing of options.

I get why people might decide not to make a huge issue about being
creepily harassed at Noisebridge or by Noisebridgers, but since creepy
sexual harassment has apparently happened, it *is* a huge issue.
> "I'm certain that you are neither offended nor creeped out."
> that you don't seem to be mentioning here.

I didn't hear about this, and I wish I had. Could people please report
it to the list when this happens so it can be discussed and aired and
the rest of us can be aware?

This is a serious case and we truly hope that all members are able to
take time to consider this evidence, discuss the situation with your
fellow Noisebridgers and come to a meeting next week to express your
opinion.
