boxend

Help! I was asked to leave the space!
Chances are you here because someone participating in the Noisebridge community asked you to leave the space and directed you to this page.

Why was I asked to leave the space?
You were most likely asked to leave because a someone felt you were being unexcellent towards the space or others in the space. This could include but are not limited to such things as...

* Leaving the space in worse condition than you found it (e.g. dumping parts out of the hack shelves and not tidying up after).
* Sleeping in the space, spending more time in the space than elsewhere as if you're living there, or basically living in the space (a violation of our renters agreement and city zoning)
* Repeatedly leaving food out for longer than reasonable (e.g. leaving the space without cleaning up, letting half-eaten food sit on a plate for hours).
* Any form of violence or hate (physical or verbal)
* Theft
* Being unreasonable or uncooperative when someone approaches you regarding conflict resolution
* Anything in violation of Anti-Harassment_Policy, in the physical or internet Noisebridge space, towards the Noisebridge community
* Coming back to the space after being asked to leave

I'm just going to ignore them and come back to the space!
Please don't come back to the space without seeking mediation and conflict resolution. Doing so will not help win over any advocates for you from the community. When someone is asked to leave, this event is communicated to the rest of the community. Coming back a few hours later or the next day will not magically erase these things. So please continue to the next section and follow those steps...

I don't think I should have been asked to leave, what can I do now?
# Send an email to [mediation-request@noisebridge.net] asking for help and Mediation. Do not use this email to explain what happened or what went wrong, the place for that is mediation.
# Participate and go to mediation.
# Come to a conclusion with the mediation that all parties are happy with.

If you return to Noisebridge after being asked to leave and not to come back without mediation, you may find yourself banned. We want to welcome as many people as we want into the space, but that only works if everyone is reasonable and open to communication. Thanks for understanding.
| Ronald
|
| Ronald has admitted to sleeping and showering at the space over the period of several months. He maintained that he should be able to continue doing it as long as he could get away with it, regardless of what other people wanted. After being asked to take a break from the space he did not respect established boundaries, showing up at the space multiple times

|-
| Sheldon Fong
|
| Sheldon is in his 90s, was a former business partner or associate of NB's landlord, and has some mental issues. He may come by and try to demand rent or approach with locksmiths to get into the building. He often wears blue, paint-spattered overalls and is somewhat hunched over. Please be kind, but do not let him in. Call for backup from other members if you need it.
|
| Has been caught sleeping here, frequently talks to herself, aggressive towards others.

Sat around speaking to herself in the hackatorium, and was aggressive towards others that were too close to her. Was caught sleeping on several occasions. When not allowed in she climbed the gate and stayed in the stairwell for a while. When told to leave she accused NoiseBridge of being infiltrated by the Lizard Illuminati. She stood outside for a bit after that holding angry signs up to the camera.
| Daniel
|
| Daniel has been caught sleeping at NoiseBridge numerous times, and is frequently drunk in the space.

He typically wears a bright red rain jacket, and carries around a suitcase. Daniel has been given several warnings against sleeping in the space, as well as heavy drinking and trying to store his belongings at NoiseBridge.

|-
| Tom Nevin
|
| Money has continually been stolen from Noisebridge cash boxes. Tom has been seen taking money from a Noisebridge donation jar.

Tom comes in frequently early in the morning and very clearly tries to get people away from the cash boxes by trying to convince to go to other parts of the space or figuring out when they're planning on leaving. Tom still tries to get in. Do not let tom in.

|-
| Hat / Beer Guy (Gio / Geovana)
|
| Too often problematically drunk in the space (4 recorded incidents):

- joined a laser class but was too drunk to remember what was taught, asked to leave the class

- drunk in space on Mardi Gras, tried to give someone a mug that said 'codility' on it insisting that it was good stuff

- pretty intoxicated and gave attitude about having to leave when space was being shut down

- got wasted and then came to the hackatorium to announce that he was the King and "what can i get for you", asked to leave for repeated sexually harassing statements

|-
| Rigol
|
| Rigol has continually slept in the space despite being asked not to numerous times. He was asked to leave and not come back but has continued to return and continued to fall asleep. When asked to leave he is argumentative but will eventually leave if you keep asking.

|-
| Christopher Presley
|
| Chris handed an extremely threatening note to a person in the space. When asked to leave the first time, Chris did not, and was required to be asked again before leaving. He claims to be a CTO of a "Multi-musicality" platform.

|-
| George Mylonas
|
| George used several expensive machines in unsafe ways and ignored advice on how to use them correctly. Because of this, he ended up damaging them, but hid this fact. He demonstrated carelessness for how others would be affected by his actions. When confronted, he did not take responsibility for the damage or the carelessness. He is banned from ever returning

|-
| Nicolas H.
|
| Nick has been asked repeatedly to not drink in the space, and he continues to do so. His repeated lying about it, disregard for rules such like sleeping at the space, and causing hindrance to others makes him unwelcome until such a time that he can prove to the community he is able to function within it's bounds.

|-
| Alexander Lee
|
| Alex repeatedly physically threatened multiple members of the Noisebridge community. He is no longer welcome here.

|-
| Dan Gailey
|
| Dan has been emotionally and physically abusive, to various degrees, towards multiple members of our community.

|-
| Karriem
|
| Karriem attends meetups claiming to be an angel investor, giving people the impression that he's of significance in tech and in particular in hacker spaces, including Noisebridge. He claims to be extremely knowledgeable about various things, but when he's engaged on them, he quickly departs the conversation. Additionally, he has been hostile toward members of the community trying to address issues with him. Still tries to come in occasionally as of July 2019 (usually when there is a crypto-currency related meetup happening).

|-
| Omar / Neon / Reynaldo / Ronaldi
|
| Omar has been asked to take a break several times for leaving messes, not cleaning up after themselves, and taking food / drinks without paying. Each time, they have returned with the same behavior. He has subsequently also tried to tackle someone who helped to ask him leave the space.

|-
| Andrew
|
| Andrew was behaving extremely erratically, with delusions and hallucinations about those around him. He accused one person of trying to reprogram him, made multiple racially charged comments towards others, would not leave people alone when asked, and often could not perceive their words when they were speaking to him because of his hallucinations about what they were saying to him. He also tore up the anti-harassment policy and was extremely difficult to remove from the space because of his inability to recognize what was being asked of him, and because of all the stuff he had accumulated around him physically.

|-
| Daniel Telburg
|
| Daniel Telburg: we have heard several reports from members of the community that he has raped young women. He is not welcome at Noisebridge.

|-
| Ryan
|
| Sudoroom banned Ryan Martin for safe space reasons, stating prolonged intimidation and harassment. Due to reciprocal ban agreements for reasons of safety, he is automatically also banned from Noisebridge. It was noted that he is hard to recognize from this photo. He now has a bit longer hair (though still short) and is a bit bigger than in these photos -- one factor that might help identify him at other spaces is that he has been coming in with his girlfriend (who Sudoroom has no issue with) who has blue hair. November-2017
|-
| Rainbow
|
| Rainbow was asked to take a break because of her erratic behavior and possible drug use in the space. After the break, the problematic behavior continued. Rainbow is no longer welcome at Noisebridge. September-2017
|-
| Zach
|
| After his manipulative behavior caused too much drama and discomfort, Zach is not welcome at noisebridge. August-2017
|-
| Jeff
|
| Jeff was asked to leave Noisebridge after many conversations. He kept bringing sketchy phones into Noisebridge, thought to be stolen. He was asked about a phone stolen in Noisebridge. He continued to change the OS's on computers after being told not to do so. In all of these occasions he behaved in ways that made people at Noisebridge very uncomfortable. Jeff is no longer welcome at Noisebridge. June-2017
|-
| Patrick (aka Jin)
|

| Patrick (aka Jin) was caught stealing a computer from Noisebridge. He is no longer welcome at Noisebridge. May-2017
|-
| Damian
|
| Damian was making people uncomfortable with his erratic interactions. He was probably high. Damian refused to leave when asked. Damian is not welcome at Noisebridge. Apr-2017
|-
| Tara
|
| Tara was asked not to have her dogs at Noisebridge when they were making people very uncomfortable. She responded quite poorly and lied about the circumstances. Mar-2017
|-
| Ben Woosley
|

| Ben Woosley engaged in non-consensual sex (aka rape) with someone who comes to Noisebridge. He acknowledges the sex was non-consensual but insists it isn't rape. He is not welcome at Noisebridge. Feb-2017
|-
| Daily Swa Laurel
|
| Banned from Counter Culture Labs and The Omni on 7-Feb-2017 for online threats of violence toward a member of Counter Culture Labs. Due to reciprocal ban agreements for reasons of safety, he is automatically also banned from Noisebridge.
|-
|
| Continued to sleep at NB after many warnings. He was asked not to come back but waited a few months and lied his way about his good standing in the space, proving that he cannot be trusted. Chris Altman is not allowed to return to Noisebridge. Jan-2017
|-
| Nick
A few days later, he had a proxy return to the space a few days later on his behalf to retrieve blankets, etc. that he'd apparently stashed in the darkroom. However, what his proxy took was apparently not the blankets that he wanted, and he shortly thereafter came upstairs and went into the darkroom, himself leaving with items that appeared to be bedsheets. The fabric his associate had taken was found in a heap at the bottom of the elevator and returned to the darkroom. Several days later, Jonathan returned to Noisebridge with his hand shoved in a gym bag, claiming he had a gun. He continued pushing past people to get into the main space, screaming constantly about killing everyone and then himself, and that everyone was to leave, or he would kill them all. He also claimed that the cops were hot on his trail and would arrive at Noisebridge at any moment, and that he intended to provoke a suicide-by-cop. Not sure on whether or not he did have a gun, people were not taking a chance as they filed for the exit. However, Derek, Jedi, Rayc, Ben, stayed behind, calling him on his bullshit. Four people swarmed him as he made a b-line sprint for the fire escape. They wrestled him to the floor and removed his bags away from him. We have some raw materials on the shelf downstairs that look kinda sad and abandoned, I'd like to see them at least get put to one good brew.

Thankfully, @senoraraton has put together some fabulous documentation for it. Here's the list:

- At least 2 carboys. These may be available locally, but can also be ordered. We "can" use the 5 gallon plastic water bottles, although I personally prefer glass. - 2 x $50

- propane burner - $45. (We can get this if we really need, but I really think an electric hot plate will work just as well... I have seen one in the space recently)

- tubing I'm not sure of the exact size, but we can piece it out with the bungs. - $2.50

- hydrometer (or 3 they break fairly easily, are reasonably cheap, and fairly essential), which measure the specific gravity of the mash to determine sugar content, which provides potential alcohol yield. - 3x$9

- A couple(5+) airlocks - 7x$9

- Optional wort chiller . It is entirely possible to fabricate our own wort chiller, for likely less than we would pay for one. - $77

- Optional larger kettle - $165

A couple of blankets to cover the carboys isn't a bad idea.
I would... highly recommend that we consider getting a larger kettle. it's a pretty big investment, but currently our kettle is 5 gallons, and we can only run a 3 gallon batch because of boil over. This means we have to either make two separate batches and combine, which affects the resulting product, and also is twice as much work. Or we set up a system to do single gallon batches in maybe gallon jugs(carlo rossi party anyone?)

Total cost: $242.5 without the optional items, $484.5 with them.

Fundraising
We can assume that NB General fund will pay for half the cost, so people should pledge to pay for the remaining half.

Pledges:

- culteejen (TJ) $20

- Senoraraton (Claus) $50

THIS PROPOSAL IS ON HOLD: WE FOUND A WEBCAM THAT HAS A REALLY GOOD MIC AND WERE TRYING THAT OUT FOR NOW

So right now we have a portable stand (AV Cart like thing) that has a keyboard tray, and it has a large flatscreen monitor mount on it. We have been using it for having remote presence ability in our meetings. This setup, at one point worked well, but we kept having to pass around a mic, which was inconvenient, and also parts from it keep getting taken for other projects so it would be nice to have a set of dedicated equipment for this purpose.

The goal here will be to have an easily deployable reliable non-permanent conference mic setup. The mixer should be able to be easily fixed to the back of the monitor or under the keyboard of the AV Cart
I would... highly recommend that we consider getting a larger kettle. it's a pretty big investment, but currently our kettle is 5 gallons, and we can only run a 3 gallon batch because of boil over.

* Domains: Current domains and subdomains hosted on this server: (see
/etc/nginx/sites-enabled/*
)
* DNS: all
*.noisebridge.info
subdomains point to this server, as does the naked domain (
noisebridge.info
)
** ...but to manually renew, run
/home/noisebridge/bin/recert; sudo service nginx restart

* Unicorn uses ufw to whitelist which ports can receive incoming connections from the outside world.
** To add a port to the whitelist:
sudo ufw allow <port>

** To list firewall rules:
sudo ufw show added

** To delete a firewall rule:
sudo ufw delete <rule>

** To view (and delete) rules chronologically rather than by port:
sudo ufw status numbered

Rules and Guidelines
* Be excellent to each other
** Don't fuck up other people's shit

* Usage of containers is encouraged where practical, but not required
** Databases sometimes have issues running in Docker, for example

* If you need a different version of some database that is already running on the default port, run the version you need in a Docker container, or on a different port (and that stores its data in a different directory!)

SSH Config
I can haz access?
Yes, but you are agreeing to be excellent to each other!

Consider generating a new SSH key pair with

$ ssh-keygen -b 4096

then calling it, say,
unicorn-nb
, then add this to your
~/.ssh/config
file:

Host unicorn-nb
User noisebridge
Hostname 172.93.55.252
PreferredAuthentications publickey
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/unicorn-nb

If your SSH pub key (
~/.ssh/unicorn-nb.pub
) has been added to
unicorn-nb:~/.ssh/authorized_keys
, you should now be able to shell in by typing

$ ssh unicorn-nb

...and thanks to the
~/.ssh/config
entry, the name of the server you're trying to SSH into -- namely
unicorn-nb
in this case -- should autocomplete! Add your name to the access list below!

For SSH access, post to Discuss or visit the #Unicorn Slack channel and ask @jslack, @elimisteve.

DNS Access
noisebridge.info is registered on NameCheap.com . As of 2019.02.13, @mindfu, @elimisteve, and @jslack have permission to edit DNS (on NameCheap).

Keeping in mind that
*.noisebridge.info
already points to Unicorn, if you nonetheless need to edit DNS, tell @elimisteve, @jslack, or @mindfu your NameCheap username or email.

Slack SSO
Services without their own authentication systems can be shielded a smidge from the ravages of the open internet by placing them behind the basic single sign-on (SSO) gateway at https://login.noisebridge.info.

In the target service's nginx configuration, add
include snippets/auth-init.conf;
toward the start of the main
server
block. Somewhere after that, add
include snippets/auth-require.conf;
, either in the
server
block or in the specific
location
block(s) you want to protect. See
/etc/nginx/sites-available/printprintprint.noisebridge.info
for an example.

Unauthenticated visitors will be redirected to Slack to sign in (via OAuth) with their Noisebridge Slack account, then redirected back to their destination. The login service injects a cookie to keep track of user sessions, and intercepts requests via nginx's
auth_request
mechanism to check for the presence of a valid cookie. See https://printprintprint.noisebridge.info for what this looks like in the wild.

If configured on a reverse proxy-based service, the SSO gateway will automatically pass on the logged-in user's ID and Slack name via the
X-Noisebridge-User-ID
and
X-Noisebridge-User-Name
headers, respectively.

Note the intent here isn't to exclude anyone by requiring authentication, but to provide a modicum of protection against drive-by mischief for those services that need it (like OctoPrint).
