Introduction and Names
* Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to explain what Noisebridge is about: "Noisebridge is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides a space for creation, collaboration, and learning about technology and creative projects. Noisebridge provides space, power tools, and infrastructure to help the public learn new skills and create cool things. Noisebridge continues to exist through and depends entirely on membership fees and donations. Our code of conduct is 'Be excellent to each other'."
* Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to give a brief primer on consensus process: We agree and so should you! Only paid-up members can block consensus.
* Introduce any new or unusual moderation techniques that you may be using during the meeting like: direct responses, limited speaking time, orderless stack, &c.
* Round of introductions (remember, announcements come later):
** What's your name,
** are you a member,
** what do you do, and
** if you are new: how did you hear about Noisebridge?

Short Announcements
* Cool new projects? Something you'd like people to know? Say now, but keep it short!
* Any happenings at the space of which members should be made aware.

* We are planing for Makers Faire, May 19-20. If you would like to help out with the booth or show any of your projects, please visit the Maker_Faire_2012 wiki page. - Christopher

New or Stale Events
* Is there anything new happening at the space?
* Is there anything that has stopped happening at the space?
* If this is the first meeting of the month, review all the and try to weed out stale events.

Membership Binder
* Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to describe the membership application process.
* Read off any names from the binder for the past month. Write a check on every open application.
* Anyone eligible to join this week should
** introduce themselves,
** answer any questions members may have for them, then
** leave the area in search of gifts (traditionally beer and a lime, or cookies) for the rest of the group.
* The rest of the meeting should reach consensus on whether they may join.
* Remember to applaud new members when they return.

Financial Report
* Funds in bank:
* Noisetor (See the bulletpoints at the bottom of http://noisetor.net/finances/#summary):

Consensus items
You may wish to invite a knowledgeable volunteer to repeat a brief primer on the consensus process.

Proposals from last week
(Add any items which pass or are blocked to the Consensus Items History page.)

Proposals for next week
(Add any new items for consensus to the Current Consensus Items page.)

Discussion Items
If an item of discussion drags on too long, further discussion may be postponed until after the meeting ends.

During discussion, it is not necessary to write down exact what each person says. Record the topics of discussion, and any items of consensus or controversy here. Detailed descriptions of the conversation should go on the discuss page for this meeting.

End of Meeting
* PGP Key Signing could happen now, check the list to see who wants in on the action.
* Return the membership binder to it's rightful location.
* Clean and tidy the meeting notes, then save them to the wiki.
* Send a summary of the meeting notes to the discussion list.
* Enjoy the company of your fellow hacker or robot.
* Discuss any items for which there was not time during the meeting.
Christopher and Onno

- we need a new balloon source
- the $150 are probably too small
- the 100g balloons were free
- we need a better battery
- battery power split/managed
- better battery for the arduino/intervalometer
- intervalometer
- better battery for the camera
- power bus?
- we need better launch organisation
- better cabling for the video equipment
- suggestion (Onno, former discussion with Mark): Build nice acryclic frame to mount everything,
- power wires etc.
- we need video recording
- birthing bag
- better video receiver
- 'ground support equipment' with nice video screen, video recording, video
streaming
- get legal information/double check on multiple payloads per balloon and
weight limits
- build a rope-cut device. Avoid running a set of cables to above the
- parachute. Heat wire around nylon rope?
- test cutting device in freezer (is completely exposed to ambient
- temperature!)
- order styrofoam, new, larger

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the hackerspace Noisebridge, our ongoing mission to explore strange (yet economically priced) new ascent technologies; to seek out new parts and new partnerships; to boldly go where no non-government-or-massively-industrially-funded-group has gone before.
Project Summary
Spacebridge is a project that documents the necessary steps to produce a cheap and easy deployment platform for lofting instrumentation and photographic equipment into the stratosphere. We approach this project with a heavy slant towards education, with a hope to bring science education away from something that you know because of a dusty old book, to a hands on experience.

The Spacebridge project is run out of the Noisebridge hacker cumminity, a non-profit educational corporation for public benefit provides an infrastructure for technical-creative projects.

The Spacebridge project can be broken up into 3 parts. The payload delivery system, payload bus, and the payload itself.

The delivery system is currently a meteorological weather balloon that lofts our system about 100k feet into the air (commercial airlines fly at around 32k feet). The system also includes flight lights for increased visibility, a radar reflector dish for visibility by radar tracking systems, and a four foot parachute to help slow the decent.

The payload bus is an environmentally protecting enclosure that keeps all the payload items secure and in a known orientation and attached to necessary ports. It also protects the electronic equipment from the cold (it's around -30 degrees up there).

Lastly, we have the payload itself. We currently loft 2 cameras that have been hacked so that custom software can be run on them. We also send up an android cell phone which records accelerometer, magnetometer and GPS data, and text messages me the GPS data for our recovery. We also send up a secondary tracking system that consists of a commercial GPS tracking system, an opentracker (a custom made system to convert the GPS signals into APRS data packets) and a ham radio to transmit those data packets.
- Christopher

Started the meeting with giving Onno a walk though of the current state of the project. Outlined what equipment we are using, and what equipment we are planning on replacing.
Equipment being replaced
- Camera
- Radio transmitter
- open tracker
- GPS puck
- antena
- Payload bus

Brian gave an update of the new APRS equipment

Onno is interested in adding a live video feed to our payload. Looked at the Adeptco.com transmitters.
It draws alot of power, so batteries for it will add alot of weight. Possible solutions would be to add a pressure sencor to turn it off at a certin altitud and then back on at a certine altitude for live launch and decent vedio.
- the module is 50 grams, the lithium battery should be about 90 grams.
- Use the android phone to loop the radio call sign as an audio output, route this to the video transmitter to keep call sign broadcasted.

Project status
Camera: Blake has purchsed one new camera for the project, and has started to port the CHDK.
APRS System: Brain has purchased the nessicary parts, but has not started the build process

Video Feed: Still in planning stage

Alpha was the first Spacebridge balloon flight.

Observations on the broken alpha balloon

The Alpha payload consisted of:

* Garmin GPS 18x LVC
* OpenTracker+
* Puxing PX-777 PLUS VHF Radio
* G1 Android smartphone
* Canon SD400 camera
* Canon A700 camera with fisheye lens adapte

All the above payload was housed in a styrofoam cooler. The OpenTracker+ was powered by a 9V Energizer lithium battery and supplied regulated power to the GPS. All other devices had internal Li-ion batteries.

Post-flight Analysis

The following images show vertical acceleration (onboard sensor) and vertical position (via GPS) of the space vehicle (SV) as a function of sample. The Android sample rate varies but was generally around 80 samples per second. Sample numbers correspond from sensor to sensor.

GPS tracking lagged behind actual ascent. There are two possible explanations for this. Either
* We are moving faster than ITAR permits, so GPS is reporting the maximum upward speed allowable, resetting to the actual position once the error is too large, OR
* Sample rate is regularly variable.
There was a large dropout period between samples 2940000 and 3680000, presumably due to the extreme altitude. Descent began somewhere around sample 3250000 as estimated by curve-fitting the ascent and descent. Estimated maximum altitude is ~20000 m. Landing occurred approximately at sample 5520000.

Acceleration starts out at 10 m/s due to gravity. Jerk begins at sample 400000 due to payload handling, lining up nicely with the launch at 470000 shown by GPS. The SV continued to ascend until sample 3244710, which appears to indicate a pop. After this sample, the acceleration trends less than 10m/s and slowing, indicating a controlled fall. At sample 5460000, the sensor becomes inverted, as the impact of landing flips the payload (or at least the phone). This corresponds closely with the GPS recorded SV landing at sample 5520000. There was a very large spike at 6280000, from unknown causes. Finally, the payload was righted at 9300000.

Alpha was the first Spacebridge balloon flight.

Observations on the broken alpha balloon

The Alpha payload consisted of:

* Garmin GPS 18x LVC
* OpenTracker+
* Puxing PX-777 PLUS VHF Radio
* G1 Android smartphone
* Canon SD400 camera

Suggestions for improving launch quality and efficiency
- Need a standard process for setting up and testing electronics. This process must be well documented
- Preflight check list.
- Battery check
- Have ?Yay or Nay? call of the Tuesday meeting before the launch. For a ?Yay? call to be made, every critical component must be completed and tested.
- A full check list of what is going up with this launch and their dependencies
- Mark the tank as we open it, to alleviate confusion as to which one was used.
- Always take a second (back up) tank to each launch
- create wiki pages of each payload item, including set up instructions. (list of needed pages are on the bottom of this page.)
- Provide better communication for the drive out of the launch site
- locate stores in the area that can provide forgotten items like batteries and helium

List of tasks that we should do before the next launch
- Test different types of batteries in the freezer (both types of batteries and competing brands)
- acquire a bathroom scale to weigh the helium tanks with.
- Purchase condoms, extra large
- the cannon IS1100 stopped taking pictures shortly after being turned on, probably battery related, but we should test to make sure.

Ideas for next launch
- One battery grid to rule them all! This would consist of 2 battery systems that connected just prior to the component giving a back up system should one fail.
- add solar cells to the outside to the payload to test energy received as we go up. We can use the datalogger to store the information.
- Use a droid with debian installed (Chris has one) to feed data from a USB hub that had has several web cameras hooked up and save the data out to a USB harddrive. Alternatively we could also use a beagle board (Nils has one).
- Attach LED blinkies or stroke lights (from disposable cameras) to the end of the antenna support arms.
- Add a high pitch buzzer to the payload bus to help locate it
- add brightly colored inflated condoms (balloons will work also) to the payload so that they will float above the final resting place, assisting in locating it.
- Add a video camera, and stream it's feed over a ham radio to a base station. This would use a NTSC broadcast. This has the potential to be expensive, so Chris will gather - a cost estimate for this (both dollar and if possible weight)
- make the video camera steerable. Even outside of the flight this would be usable as we could then be able to see the area where the payload landed before having to walk there.

Ideas talked about, but decided to be considered independent of the core Spacebridge concept
- Generating Hydrogen quickly and cheaply. While awesome, it's to dangerous and inconvenient for us to focus on at the moment.
- UAV. Again awesome, but is a large enough project to be considered independent but closely related and potentially intersecting Spacebridge.

Wiki pages that need to be created and maintained.
- Radio, with set up instructions
- Radio Antena (dipole)
- GPS
- Packet Tracker
- Open Tracker
- radio (?)
- Need to order more balloons (?)

Maker Faire

We have decided to attempt to get an adjacent booth to noisebridge for the spacebridge exhibit.
- Christopher is to contact some people there to get this set up.

We also looked into ways to easily and safely move the helium tanks. One way was to get a trailer. They are not expensive, but we lack a place to put it. The other way was a hitch mounted box that would allow us to secure them. This is easier to store, but will have to be custom made.

Meeting notes from 03.30 (taken by Christopher Lincoln)

- G1, including applications used and set up intructions
- Canon A700 Camera, including CHDK, script, battery limitations, SD card limitations and set up instructions
- Canon IS1100 SD Camera, including CHDK, script, SDHC card limitations, instructions
- Payload Bus
- Icrais program
- Android APRS

Not all events make it onto this calendar. Many events only make it to the Discussion or Announcements mailing lists, IRC or in person at . Best of all, Noisebridge is about people getting together at the space in San Francisco to do stuff... like in person. Some events just happen. Pay attention!

Event posters are encouraged to crosspost to the Google Calendar.
