Marco (he) - building a search engine for (code learning?) resources

Zach (he) - likes to build things, learn things, meet new people, and help out noisebridge (and move it if that's what's going on)

Rich (he) - likes to hack around, playing w/ an rpi currently. Making real things w/ hims programming knowledge

Lucas - likes networking. Been here a few times before

Patrick (he/him) - fight computer security for a living

Scotty (he/him) - writing memory back to permanent storage. it's super great. He even remembers people.

Short announcements and events
* Darryl - functional programming talk tomorrow by one of the creators of Haskell - it's going to be rad
* Ryan - currently making some makerspaces over at SF city college and would love input from others after the meeting
* Patrick - New Space working group meeting on hopefully every Saturday, 6pm now to deal w/ relocation and/or dealing w/ legal stuff to stay here (skipping Thanksgiving weekend Saturday), slack channel is #new-space
* Kelly - Thanksgiving potluck! Sign up on the whiteboard by the entrance!
* Scotty - New microscope! From China! Plug it in, play with it, have fun! And be sure to re-cover w/ the dust cover. Can be used for anything, not just electronics! Has a camera and HDMI output, so hook it up to a TV!
* This Saturday (18 Nov), Plastic Manufacturing for Women/Unmen, taught by Ruth! Details on meetup too

Safe Space
* Darryl - we want people to be as comfortable as possible in the space, so when topics or behavior in the space make people uncomfortable they are within their right to ask that it stop. This doesn't translate into topics being off-limits, it just means that you should be considerate both to those around you and also the people that you're with. If you're uncomfortable you can find someone at Noisebridge that you trust or mention it in the #space-guardians channel. If you're comfortable doing so you can also ask someone to leave.
* Lizzie - sometimes it's not easy or clear asking someone to leave and so you can ask one of the people with their hands raised to help you out.

J

Kevin

Ryan

Trent

Trent: Victoria likes to say: It's ok to talk about stuff even if its controversial, involves violence, etc. but just like how in the woodshop you'd tell people before using a loud tool so they don't damage their ears, you should also tell people around you when talking about disturbing topics, etc.

Participation
* Darryl - everyone can participate at Noisebridge
* Scotty - but we also chat online right?
* Darryl - yep we have a Slack and the best way to get access is to just hang around a bit and get to know people. Once you know someone they're likely to invite you anyway. There's also #noisebridge on Freenode which is mostly empty.
* J - great way to get to know people is to show up to classes and events because most of the people get into Noisebridge this way, it's how they start their participation
* Darryl - works for me - came to CHM
* Scotty - and how to you get access anytime you want? One of the ways is becoming a Philanthropist.

Philanthropists
* Paddy - someone who contributes to the space, who is recommended by a member
* Trent - how do you lose access?
* Paddy - being unexcellent, stopping your dues.
* Trent - we have auto-hiatus these days, but Members who have cause can revoke your Philanthropist status
* Scotty - they get 24 access, and can renew 30 day tokens
* Trent - don't let people borrow your key, that's one way to lose it.
* Scotty - we have Paddy's application tonight. Sponsored by J. Any objections? ... Questions?
* J - I suggested that he should apply because he works a lot for the space in particular late at night. Coming for at least two years, helped with Makerfaire, CHM, metalshop, helped build the metalshop tables. Helped us get the vending machines, the kiln. Gone above and beyond the call of duty and would like to be able to hack here late. And so I recommended philanthropy.
* Scotty - Cool will leave it up to you to get that sorted
~ applause for Paddy ~

Membership Binder
* Darryl - A member is one who has gotten a neural implant so you can communicate with our lord Consenso. It's someone who has a serious commitment to the future of the space and its longeity. The big difference from Philanthropy is that you can sign off on Philanthropy or Membership applications. You can grant 30 day access and not just renew, and participate in the big C Consensus process to the fullest extent. You can remove Philanthropy status from people.
* Scotty - counterpoint: you don't need to be a member to do anything at Noisebridge or even to participate in a very serious way. We've had many integral people in the space who are not members, even to the point that we just assumed they were a member due to their work and awesomeness.
* Darryl - yep I remember Scotty applying because people just presumed he was one. I decided it the other night when Steve pretty much filled it out for me.
* Ryan - You don't need to be a member to participate in consensus discussions, or to propose something.
* Scotty - the weight that you have in the consensus process is not strictly related to being a member, it's more about your participation in the community.

Financial Report
TODO

Consensus
* Parick - Outside these walls in the default world, we have great ways of making decisons that usually result in the winning side very happy, and everyone else sad. Consensus is the decision process that NB uses to make big decisions, like where should we move, should we sign a lease, what rules we have and to change. For everything else, we have doocracy and don't need to have elongated discussions about it. It's a decision process where we bring proposals to the meeting and solidify them into a proposal. We discuss them to solidfy them until it doesn't change for two meetings. Then it comes up for consensus. T?he only proposal that will pass consensus is one that all the members agree to. If you have a proposal comes up that you disagree to, you have an obligation to make a counterproposal that both you and the person propsing can live with. There is the ablity to block consesnsu. This is a nuclear option. It's saying "if you let this pass, fuck you, I quit noisebridge. This thing will cost the community my participation in NB." It usually doesn't get used.

Everyone is free to participate in the consensus process, and the molding of the process.

Concensus proposals are rare. Proposals are on the wiki. 99.X% of decisions don't need big C consensus, but it exists for when we need it.

* invite a knowledgeable volunteer to give a brief primer on consensus process
* It is important that everyone in attendance understands at least:
** Blocking with verbalized principled objections.
** Why we use consensus over other approaches to decision making.
** How consensus isn't a legislative process
** Why consensus isn't applicable to some things like conflict resolution, resolution of time sinks, and the like.

Proposals from last week
(Add any items which are consensed upon or someone has raised a principle objection for to the Consensus Items History page.)

Proposals for next week
(Add any new items for consensus to the Current Consensus Items page.)

Patrick: I propose NB establishes two separate funds for possible moving.

That Noisebridge establish two new funds.

CONSENSUS ITEM TEXT

1. A holding fee fund of $5,000 which will be used to "hold" properties forlease or sale that Noisebridge might consider in the future. These funds wouldallow us time to engage in a full capital C consensus process relating to the ultimate lease or purchase decision about our new space.

2. A moving fund. This fund will collect money specifically for the costs associated in moving, renting, or purchasing a new space for Noisebridge. Should an agreement be reached with the current landlords at 2169 this money would be directed either to rent or to building improvements as required.

END CONSENSUS ITEM TEXT

Patrick 1. alloc 5k from general fund into a holding fee fund, b/c in the process of doing the final consensus process, we might need to put some money down to prevent the location from going to some other party. Unlikely that it'll be exhausted, but is prudent.

Lizzie: Can we have a process for when this will be spent?
Patrick: Probably just little c consensus?
Lizzie/Trent: Can we spell that out?
Patrick: It seems unlikely that we'll just arbitrarily spend it
Trent: Good opportunity to record the way of doing things that is historically verbal
Lizzie: Good to head off an argument over how many spaces we spend this on, etc.
Scotty: Whats the range usually?
Trent: Victoria said she used 1k for a personal apt, at least

2. Moving fund. Looking at many options for financing leasing or buying. There'll be lots of fees, costs, to do this. This fund would be where we collect money donated specifically for the purposes of moving, etc. incl. legal fees to lawyers to figure out our current situation. This fund will start empty or w/ nominal amt for current legal rep. Will add a project to donate.noisebridge.net. If the fund is not expended and we get a lease, we can convert to rent money or general fund.

Scotty: Maybe we shouldn't call it a moving fund b/c its for more than just moving costs, but also possibly buying a building, legal fees, etc.

Trent: Is the purpose of this being separate b/c its going to be quite large ultimately?
Patrick: Yes
Trent: We should spell this out in the proposal text, that this is the purpose of it, and why it's separate.
Trent: Also will this be specifically earmarked for moving??
Patrick: Yes

Trent is apathetic.

Discussion
Longer discussion items belong here. This is the last part of the meeting so that people can break off and continue their discussion afterwards.

Discussion Items
If any important discussion happens, it should be happening after forward progress is made during consensus.

Ryan: Can we make a page or something on requirements or a guide for people who want to help out looking for locations for a possible new Noisebridge location? I have quite a few friends in the real estate business who've given me tips on looking around for stuff and I'm just curious what requirements we have.

Patrick: That's one of the things we set out to decide on on Saturday. There werent' many controversial items.

J: Everything is in the wiki, slack channel (#new-space), and the Google spreadsheet

Patrick: Meetings every Saturday on this, so please come.

Instructions
Congratulations and/or condolences! You're reading this because you're participating in a meeting of Noisebridge!

Meetings should be limited to an hour when possible. Shorter is fine, but avoid rushing.

You should read this instructional section thoroughly, and treat them as a guideline for how to host a meeting of Noisebridge. There are three ingredients to an Excellent meeting: A number of note takers, some facilitators, and participants.

Meetings are just one of the tools used at Noisebridge to create net forward progress on whatever it is we're all trying to do. Meetings aren't the only way to make decisions or have discussions, and in fact its usually a much better idea to talk about things outside the meeting before dragging the entire community kicking and screaming into it.

Note Takers
# Confirm last meeting was saved
# Take new notes
# Save and share the notes at the end of the meeting (instructions at the bottom).

Facilitators
There are generally two kinds of facilitator roles at a Noisebridge meeting:

* Stack taker - Useful when a lot of folks want to hop on the discussion stack. This gives everyone a turn to have their feelings heard. Usually only works when there is exactly one stack taker.
* Moderators - Keeps the meeting moving and prevents everyone from wasting too much time on one subject. Anyone is free to pick up moderation and move the meeting along.

In general, moderators should:
* Understand the structure of Noisebridge decision-making
* Make sure everyone gets a chance to speak.
* Speak only minimally yourself.
* Keep the meeting moving, and avoid getting bogged down.
* Identify discussion items, arrange times limits for talking about each item.
* Identify and summarize consensus, suggest things that need to be done.
* Get the membership binder and ensure that it is returned safely.

Participants
Everyone at a Noisebridge meeting who has consented to participating in one is a participant!

* Say your name before you talk.
* Remain on-topic, and speak as concisely as possible.
* Assist the note-taker with any links or corrections that are needed.
* Remain respectful of other participants, their time, and the consensus and moderation process.

* Any happenings at the space of which members should be made aware.

Safe Space
Note: This section is experimental. We discussed it at Meeting_Notes_2016_06_28. We're going to try it for the next meeting, and see how it goes, and then discuss in the discussion section how it went, and how we'd like to tweak it.

Noisebridge is a safe space. Invite a volunteer to describe what that means.

Some specific points you might prompt the group to touch on, if it doesn't happen naturally:
* What to do if you feel uncomfortable.
* Noisebridge strives to be radically inclusive. What does that mean?
* Noisebridge has an antiharassment policy. What does that mean?

Participation
Invite a knowledgable volunteer to describe who can participate at Noisebridge, including:
* Describe how to get an rfid key for the door system
* Describe how to get access to slack

* Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to describe Philantropy, and the application process.
* Read off any names from the binder for the past month. Any applicants must have their sponsor present to vouch for them.
* If there are no objections, they're a philanthropist! Their pledge should be handed over to the Secretary posthaste, after which their token will be updated to give them the 24/7 access they've earned(?)

* Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to describe membership, and the application process.
<blockquote>Being a member of Noisebridge is not like being a member of a gym or your local chess club. Anyone can come to Noisebridge to hack and learn: you don't need to be a member for that. At Noisebridge, membership is something different: it means taking responsibility and committing to help to maintain, improve, and govern Noisebridge. As a member of Noisebridge, you don't just come here to hack and learn, you actively work to improve what you see around you, help to deal with problems, and make this community and space better than it is today.</blockquote>
* Read off any names from the binder for the past month. Mark down a check or other indicator on every open application to keep track of how many weeks they've been read out.
* Anyone eligible to join this week should
** introduce themselves,
** answer any questions members may have for them, then
** leave the area in search of gifts (traditionally beer and a lime, or cookies) for the rest of the group.
* The rest of the meeting should reach consensus on whether they may join.
* Remember to applaud new members when they return.

Financial Report
* Funds in bank:
* Noisetor (See the bulletpoints at the bottom of http://noisetor.net/finances/#summary):
* Any other details by those participating in handling our financials

Consensus

Discussion
Longer discussion items belong here. This is the last part of the meeting so that people can break off and continue their discussion afterwards.

Discussion Items
If any important discussion happens, it should be happening after forward progress is made during consensus.

End of Meeting
# Return the membership binder to its rightful location.
# Discuss any items for which there was not time during the meeting.
# Enjoy the company of your fellow hacker, robot, or robothacker.

Note taker posts the notes
# Clean and tidy the meeting notes including removing all these really verbose instructions.
# Fill out the short summary at the top listing just announcements, consensus items, discussion topics, and names of new members and philanthropists.
# Copy paste the notes to the next meeting page. (They will become Last meeting at midnight.)
# Email the meeting summary to [mailto:noisebridge-discuss@lists.noisebridge.net?subject=MeetingNotes Noisebridge Discuss] and [mailto:noisebridge-announce@lists.noisebridge.net?subject=MeetingNotes Noisebridge Announce] lists.
# CC on the email treasurer@noisebridge.net and secretary@noisebridge.net if there are new members and philanthropists.
# Edit the Current Consensus Items if anything is proposed for consensus next week.
# Edit the Consensus Items History if anything was reached consensus or failed to reach consensus this week.

Fun things to do after
* Reprise of the Hackernationale. [This is anarchy - we do what the wiki says!]
* PGP Key Signing could happen now (if it doesn't happen before any given Meeting). Ask others around the space or check the list to see who wants in on the action.

Welcome to Noisebridge! We're glad you're interested in our space and we look forward to seeing you soon. Here's some advice to help you
understand what you're getting into and see if it appeals to you.

Who is welcome
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to visit Noisebridge. We ask that visitors follow our guiding rule "to be excellent to each other" in the best spirit they can; please see our access policy. New visitors can drop by anytime unannounced and do not necessarily need an invitation for a tour or for attending a scheduled event/class. It may be wise to follow our suggested advice below on the best times to visit, to ensure there are people there who can let you in.

Noisebridge is wheelchair accessible though people who use wheelchairs may need help with the heavy manual elevator doors.

Come with an open mind
Noisebridge is largely about learning and exploring, and there's lots to see and learn here! Activities at Noisebridge include hanging out, working on personal or group projects, and scheduled or improptu workshops and classes on a range of topics, from foreign languages to photography, lockpicking, woodworking, computer programming and mathematics.

Some times are better than others
We have many scheduled activities in the space, and many of us have day jobs. You can coordinate the time of your visit to ensure that you can find people to talk with (and especially to let you into the building in the first place!)

* Are you new? Wondering when to drop by? Come by any evening - you don't necessarily have to wait for a class, an event or a meeting. Any night there will generally be people hanging out, and you're welcome to just show up, to say "I'm new!" and then get a tour, or to just relax and work on your laptop until a conversation of interest comes up.
* If you're interested in particular activities, check out our schedule, posted on the main page of this site.
* If you'd like to come during unstructured time and talk with lots of people, after hours are generally best.
* If you'd prefer a quieter environment, come earlier in the day.
* If you'd like to see the anarco-syndicalist factory of how a long-living hackspace is maintaining, tag along to our Tuesday 8pm meeting, where affairs are often excitingly hashed out.
* You're unlikely to find many people in the space before noon on most days.
* This is discussed in painful detail at Hours
* The people around you may not know you well, but they might love you a bit more if you fix a random thing. Even if its just cleaning plates of dishes, helping to organize the parts bins, or tidying an obviously dirty desk.

Who's in charge?
YOU ARE! (with the consent of the folks around you!) Noisebridge attempts to be as leaderless and as non-hierarchical and unruly as we can get. We encourage anyone in the space to be as responsible as anyone else. If you're a new visitor, that means the member or vouchsafed guest who you first meet is as good as anyone else to ask questions of.

Our code of conduct
Our chief guiding principle is to "be excellent to one another". Please respect the other people you meet at Noisebridge and the Noisebridge space itself.
We welcome visitors because we believe in our community and want to share the things we're working on with everyone. We also have community standards.

Other people's stuff
Please try to be careful with the things you find at Noisebridge, and recognize that the things on shelves are other people's stuff.

Not "child-safe"
We have not limited what we like to explore or discuss according to anyone's notions of "appropriateness" for children. Thus, anyone entering the space can be exposed to ideas, concepts, language and items which some would consider "adult-themed". We also have some tools and materials that can be hazardous for children or adults if used improperly. Children are as welcome in the space as any other person - just be prepared for what they may encounter.

Hostile network
The network at Noisebridge - like any public network - should be regarded as potentially hostile. This means that you should assume that any unencrypted communications over the network could be (and most likely are) monitored by others. Examples of vulnerable communications include POP3/IMAP email clients, most web browsing, IRC/AIM and similar chat protocols that are often not encrypted. While no issues have come up to date, and our code of conduct opposes malicious monitoring of others, it is wise to be aware of the potential. Stick to using SSL or secure tunnels or VPNs for anything that uses a password or that you otherwise wouldn't want other people to read. If you don't know how to protect your communications with encryption, many people at Noisebridge would be glad to help you out! (It would be nice if someone would provide links to a decent guide here.)

Attempt at a Semi Decent Guide
The most secure option you have is to set up an SSH tunnel to a remote server, and then use a proxy server like Polipo to forward all your HTTP through that server. Done properly, this will encrypt all your traffic without any further worries. If you do not have SSH access to a remote server, then you can use Tor or similar to encrypt your traffic without exposing it to the Noisebridge network.

The fallback position is to ensure that as many services as possible use HTTPS by default (especially webmail) and at least have browser based solution to protect against CRSF/XSS attacks for everything else. This may happen even if the website itself is solid -- if you're on a compromised internal network, the attacker can inject content into any HTML page that you're reading.

Recommended Firefox Addons:

* Certificate Patrol: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/certificate-patrol/
* Perspectives: https://www.networknotary.org/firefox.html
* HTTPS Everywhere: https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere
* Noscript (even with "all access" it still catches many CSRF/XSS attacks): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/

Recommended Chrome Extensions:

* KB SSL Enforcer: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/flcpelgcagfhfoegekianiofphddckof
* NotScripts: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/odjhifogjcknibkahlpidmdajjpkkcfn

Recommended General Security:

* If you use Google, two factor authentication is vastly more secure than just a password.
* Although coming up with a good password is nice, you're far more secure if you use a password manager like KeyPass or 1Password. The best password is one you don't remember.
* If someone gets their hands on the physical machine, all bets are off. Try to avoid strange USB sticks and CDs, even if they look shiny.
If you have an RFID token, and a Noisebridge Member trusts you, the member can add your RFID to our access control system and you can get 30-day access to noisebridge without having to use the doorbell.

After 30 days, any member or philanthropist can renew your token!

To see how long you've got left, just scan it upstairs at door and see what the display says.

Members and Philanthropists also have RFID access to noisebridge, but theirs never expires, and works 24/7.

Also, if you don't have an RFID (like a clipper card), Noisebridge has RFID tokens!

They're small and blue keyfobs. We bought a big bag of them for $MONEY, so if you want one you should pony up $5 and do your part to keep Noisebridge kickin'.

More about Earl, the Access Control System
There are four access levels within the system:

* Daytime Access - You can enter the space without restriction between 10:00 and 22:00, but cannot register new tokens
* Power User - You've got some extended hours from 7:00 to 11:00, but still cannot register new tokens
* Philanthropist - You have 24 hour access to the space
* Member - 24 hour access, and you can register new tokens

Having a token is a sign of responsibility at Noisebridge. All who have tokens are allowed to bring other people into the space, and can also buzz others up by scanning their token.

You are responsible for who you bring into the space! If you don't know someone, don't let them in unless you're 100% willing and able to give them a tour of noisebridge. Make sure that you tell them:

* Who we are
* What goes on
* The weekly meeting is a great place to get to know everyone

Equally important, check the 86 page to see who you shouldn't let in. Everyone is welcome to visit Noisebridge, but not everyone is welcome to stay.

Hello, former TechShop members.

The sudden closure of TechShop is a great blow to the maker community.

We hope that you will be able to find and develop new places to continue making and creating. While you explore where next to work on your projects, you are invited to come work and create at Noisebridge...

...but, though there's lots of overlap, we'd like to note that we're significantly different from TechShop:

We are a hackerspace:
* nonprofit,
* community run
* do-ocratic

instead of a makerspace:
* for profit
* employee maintained
* members only

In short, Noisebridge is a community whose purpose is to share knowledge and tools with as many people as possible. We look out for each other and often help each other's projects succeed. While we work together to gather and provide as much infrastructure and and as many tools as we can, we are not a production facility.

Here are some more specific differences:
* At Noisebridge, there are no employees. We are all responsible for upkeep of the space and the tools within it.
* We operate on Do-ocracy, which is similar to a real-life wiki.
* Noisebridge is donation supported.
**There aren't dues or monthly fees, but it's considered excellent to donate a bit when we use the space to cover our expenses.
**All our tools are donated. We do not have the same variety, quality, or reliability of tools as TechShop.
**We work to keep our tools in safe working order, but accept that when people are learning sometimes things get broken.
* We have one rule: "Be excellent to each other". We also have a strict Anti-Harassment_Policy
* Noisebridge people tend to be friendly and talk to each other and resolve problems through communication
* No one at Noisebridge is entitled to be there, or to use any particular machine. We cooperate with our fellow makers, and share.
** We don't reserve time on machines and we share our time on them.
* We don't require classes to use our tools, with the exception of the laser cutter.
**However if we don't know how to use a tool safely, we ask for help and wait until someone can show us how.
** The laser cutter has training required to use it. Our scheduled trainings are on our meetup page, or one can come to the space and ask around.
* If a machine breaks, there are no employees to fix it - we'll have to figure it out ourselves. We try to fix it and enlist help when we can't do it ourselves.
* We can, and should be, asked to leave Noisebridge at any time if we're being disrespectful or threatening to the others in the space, or the space itself. If this occurs, we are expected to leave without protest.
* We are also all empowered to ask others to leave if they are being disrespectful or threatening to the others in the space, or the space itself - this is how we maintain a safe-space.

Overall, it's a pretty different model, and it doesn't fit everyone's needs, but it's amazing to see it work. If you are interested, please come by and take a tour of the space.

We don't work in theory - just in practice. :-)
Best of all, Noisebridge is about people getting together at the space in San Francisco to do stuff. DO pay attention, as some eventSs just arise organically from the bottom up!

Want to host your event at Noisebridge? We like seeing classes and talks on interesting things pertaining to various subjects of hacking. Most of all, we like seeing familiar faces. |description = <br>Hack the Left is an anticapitalist hackathon, going on for the entire long weekend of February 5th-7th at Noisebridge. This is an experiment to see what happens when you get a bunch of leftists in a room for a weekend with the intention to advance liberatory and anticapitalist projects using technology. This includes software projects like Tor and Signal, art projects like the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project and Men in Grey, hardware projects like mesh networks and signal jammers, and tools for rad organizations like Anti Police-Crimethink Project and Food Not Bombs. It's clear that there's a huge amount of opportunity for liberatory technology. It's up to us to build it.<br>

*Hackathon participants should be able to get into Noisebridge by its 11:00 AM opening hour, if not earlier, for both weekend days.
